The Coast Guard and a Good Samaritan rescued a man overboard approximately six miles northeast of Santa Cruz Island on Saturday.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach command center received a call from a 49-foot boat at approximately 3:45 p.m. reporting a 66-year-old man fell overboard with no lifejacket.
Watchstanders diverted Coast Guard Station Channel Islands 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boat crews and Coast Guard Auxiliary air support. They also coordinated the launches of the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Blackfin and a Coast Guard Air Station San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter air crew. Towboat US, and a Good Samaritan aircraft also assisted in the search, according to the Coast Guard
At approximately 4:33 p.m. a Good Samaritan vessel, “Perception” located and recovered the man. Towboat US met with the Perception, confirmed the identity of the man, and Station Channel Islands RB-M boat crews embarked the man and transferred him back to the 49-foot vessel.
“This incident highlights the importance of wearing a life jacket at all times when underway, especially in rough seas,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Logan Venero, a boatswain’s mate assigned to Station Channel Islands. “In the unfortunate event of a man overboard, it is important to remain calm, mark the position on the GPS and throw a life ring or other flotation aid towards the person in the water. It is also important to remain where the person fell off and drift with the prevailing winds and currents.”
No medical concerns were reported.
Great job, sailors of the Perception.
What an irresponsible thing for the man overboard to do. Our tax dollars being wasted yet again by having to rescue someone who was obviously unequipped to be on a boat. I certainly hope that this Jonah has to reimburse the government and also if the folks on the private vessel were forced to use a couple of ounces of diesel to rescue him or their schedule was impacted, he should compensate them as well.
Okay haters who want to go after me for advocating not falling overboard and if you do refusing rescue because it costs money, bring it on! SOFT!
Totally soft! Why, just this weekend, whilst eating delicious and dangerous street meat, I slipped in some hot street meat grease and broke my toe. Being that the pain was only a 2.89/10 (similar to violent vomiting, cramping and diarrhea that accompanies food poisoning, like my friend got from the licensed meat dealers), I didn’t bother asking anyone for help, so I limped and slid my way along the sidewalk until I reached some medicinal herbs I found growing in a sidewalk planter. Being the bootstrap puller I am, I threw my useless cellphone at a fireman as I refused his help and administered my own first aid using a dirty popsicle stick caked with cascarone confetti as a toe splint. I type this on my phone as I am still limping my way home, glittery toe in drag, cursing all those who try to use our precious tax pennies to help me out! Hard!
Why were you in drag? Anyway, talk to the mayor about sidewalk food vendors – and the medicinal herbs in the planters have been removed because of odor concerns. (It was that or put in expensive odor control measures.) But as a taxpayer, thanks for not wasting public resources. And next time, don’t fall off the boat.
Aye aye, Cap’n! Yeah fell right off that boat and onto the meat juice!
This right here. THIS IS AN AMERICAN!
Nah Doc, it’s all about you, not a thing to do with this guy who was thankfully saved. 100% you, Mr. Softie.
And my story was a joke. My God you people have no humor or sense of satire…..
I don’t think Dok will cotton on to any of this.
Do you call him Doc Cotton because he’s so SOFT?
Check out these couple of clowns! Making their little internet fun stuff about a guy who was probably about to drown and got rescued. Comparing it to sprain and strains on a local trail. All pissed off! Sure guys, you’re proving yourselves clueless. And Sac, wow. What a story. You’re weird. Very, very weird.
The sailboat operator nailed it and saved a man’s life. All us boaters with experience would do the same.
Great story.
Wait, so making fun of people who find themselves in trouble out in nature is not okay? Is that like a 3 out of 10 not okay?
They’re making fun of you, not him.
Not the pointiest syringe in the flu shot clinic….
