Coast Guard Cannot Locate Reported Victims

Source: Montecito Fire Department

At approximately 7:14 p.m. on June 30, 2020, The Montecito Fire Department responded along with the United States Coast Guard, Carpinteria-Summerland Fire and Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol to the report of a possible ocean rescue. The reporting party lost sight of a group of 3-4 subjects on a raft that was beyond the buoy line and appeared to be heading out to sea. The subjects were thought to be juveniles and did not appear to be wearing life jackets.

Montecito Fire units performed a land-based search from the Hammonds Beach area to Lookout Park and placed a resource at QAD to provide a better visual of the search area. Carpinteria-Summerland Water Rescue 61 launched at the Rosewood-Miramar beach access point and along with the Harbor Patrol searched the coastline from Miramar Beach to Carpinteria State Beach.

Coast Guard utilized two ocean vessels including the Cutter Halibut and a Dauphin helicopter to search along the coastline. The Halibut searched throughout the night and the helicopter was launched again at first light to continue the search. The incident was transitioned to the United States Coast Guard at 8:46 p.m.

None of the responding resources were able to locate any victims and the search was suspended.  No known missing subjects have been reported at this time.
