Climate Rally Held in Santa Barbara

Source: Sunrise Santa Barbara

Today, UCSB Environmental Affairs Board, Sunrise Santa Barbara, the Society of Fearless Grandmothers, SB 350, and SBCAN came together at the Santa Barbara County Admin Building to call on Governor Newsom to end oil and gas permits in California.

This was one of 11 such actions across the state, coordinated by the Last Chance Alliance.

Attendees wrote messages to Gov. Newsom on the sidewalk in chalk. Speakers talked about the need to end fossil fuel extraction to mitigate climate change and to protect the health of communities situated near oil and gas wells.

They cited the rising temperatures, sea levels, and severity of natural disasters around the world and in California, and they advocated for a just transition to an equitable economy focused on renewable energy.

  1. Tree huggers that don’t own cars or live a normal civilized life that probably inherited a house from their loved ones and only pay tax property to survive and live off caned beans and ramen noodles

  2. Honest question – do you really think we stand a chance in Hades of reversing climate change at this point?
Thirty people wearing plastic shoes, synthetic tie-dyes, polypropylene shirts holding a plastic water bottle and waving signs printed with oil-based markers screeching on about “Big Oil” like it’s still 1969 ain’t gonna get the job done.

  3. What is the time frame for the implementation of banning oil, gas permits in CA as well as all imports and how much would that reduce CA’s overall carbon footprint?
I will say that command economies were seen as failures by Leon Trotsky who believed that those at the top of the chain of command, regardless of their intellectual capacity, operated without the input and participation of the millions of people who participate in the economy and who understand/respond to local conditions and changes in the economy.

  4. Since we live in the Western US where distances driven are longer, how many miles do you have to drive an EV with a 400 Mile range to put out less overall emissions than a Corvette?
Are you aware that at a 400 mile range, a hybrid beats an EV?
Because of propaganda. There is no such thing as a Zero emissions vehicle

  5. Nothing like going out and protesting for the cause of weakening the position of the US and Europe against its adversaries, Putin and Xi. These people might as well be holding a “maximize Putin’s oil and gas revenue to support his invasion of Ukraine” rally. Every pipeline and every well that is shut down makes Putin a little bit stronger and the US a little bit weaker.

  6. Well intentioned? YES!
    Misinformed? VERY MUCH SO!
These people do NOT realize that fossil fuels not only are used to make gasoline, but myriad other products that we ALL use in our daily lives. I’ve heard that about 50% of it in NOT for gas. Along with the ‘clean’ electric car myth, (an electric car is merely a storage battery on wheels that gets its power from ANOTHER source) they believe that they are saving the planet. There is NO WAY we can enjoy the lifestyle we do without fossil fuels and giving them up just makes us more vulnerable to adversaries who DO produce them.

  7. You’ve been fooled by the carbon lobby propaganda. Zero emission means just that – no emissions during operation. Depending on the design hybrids emit almost immediately, as they contain low-capacity batteries. Worst of both worlds.
