CHP Motorcycle Officer Injured During Pursuit in Carpinteria

Update by California Highway Patrol

On June 28, 2021, at approximately 11:35 A.M., a traffic collision involving three vehicles occurred on U.S. 101 Northbound, north of Linden Avenue.  The collision occurred while a CHP motorcycle officer was pursuing a stolen maroon Mazda 3, which previously had been traveling wrong-way, traveling northbound on U.S. 101 Southbound near La Conchita.

Prior to the collision, the driver of the Mazda 3 exited the southbound lanes, via the on-ramp from State Route 150, and began traveling northbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 101.  A CHP motorcycle officer observed the vehicle and attempted to make an enforcement stop.  The driver of the vehicle failed to yield to the Officer’s patrol motorcycle’s lights and sirens.  After pursuing the vehicle in excess of two miles, the driver of the Mazda abruptly applied the brakes within the #1 lane of the freeway, causing the CHP Officer to abruptly apply the brakes of his motorcycle.  A gray Jeep Grand Cherokee, also traveling in the #1 lane behind the Officer, collided with the left rear of the CHP motorcycle, and then collided into the rear of the Mazda.  The first impact caused the CHP motorcycle to fall onto its side and collide with the roadway, and the Officer was fully ejected from the motorcycle.  The impact between the Jeep and the Mazda caused the Mazda to move to the right across all lanes of traffic where it collided with a temporary concrete barrier wall which separated the Linden Avenue on-ramp from the right shoulder.  The right side tires of the Mazda went airborne and the tires came to rest on top of the concrete barrier wall where the vehicle became disabled.  The sole male occupant and driver of the Mazda was apprehended and arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle at the scene by CHP Officers without further incident.

The sole female occupant and driver of the Jeep, and the CHP Officer, were both transported to the Cottage Hospital Emergency Room with minor and moderate injuries, respectively.  The driver of the Mazda was also transported to the Cottage Hospital Emergency Room for evaluation of minor injuries.

CHP Coastal Division Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.  This collision is still under investigation.  If anyone has any information regarding this collision, or the events leading up to it, please contact Officer Shannan Sams at the CHP Santa Barbara Area office at (805) 967-1234.

  1. It seems to me that people have forgotten how to drive in the past year, and we are paying for their lack of training. 2 Major accidents in two weeks since the State reopened. And the ongoing and neverending construction is not helping at all…..
