California Highway Patrol (CHP) is warning drivers not to race as it posted a photo of a citation on social media last week.
CHP officers interrupted a race between a BMW and a Kia on Highway 101 in Carpinteria on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
The race took place in northbound Highway 101 lanes near Linden Ave with vehicles traveling 121 mph in a 65 mph zone.
“A BMW and Kia squared off in a race last night. Results: 0 trophies, 2 tickets, and 100% preventable. Both were traveling over 120 mph and nowhere near worth the risk. Keep it safe out there!” CHP stated on social media.
A photo of one of the citations listed “speed contest” as the reason. Additionally, citation details included four infractions including excessive speed, modified exhaust, dark window tinting, and not showing two licenses plates, one on the front and one on the back.
CHP reminds motorists that racing is dangerous and not worth the risk.

Citations only? How about, when people put the lives of others around them at serious risk, they get some jail time? Hell, innocent immigrants, US citizens and other legal residents working at their jobs or going to their court dates get arrested and jailed without even a warrant because of the color of their skin.
These 2 criminals get no jail and not even their names or photos displayed? Some f***ed up priorities in this country.
OK, but who won???
If the Kia won, I’m going to need to see dash cam video proof.
Too bad they couldn’t impound the car.
They could have and they chose not to. They also could have charged these idiots with crimes and arrested them. I don’t know wtf CHP is thinking letting them get away with mere infractions. It’s truly embarrassing on CHP’s part.
If the requirement of displaying 2 license plates is a citable violation, the why is practically every Tesla on the road driving with no front plate displayed?
Very good point. As long as you don’t get caught, I guess it’s fine. But it would make it harder for those automated license plate readers
