Chipmunks Eat Succulents?
By an edhat reader
Do Chipmunks eat succulents? You bet. I wouldn’t have believed it, but I caught the little gal/guy noshing away on one of my Echeverias. S/he was too quick for a photo.

Aug 05, 2021 08:32 PMMaybe putting out water would solve the problem? I put out cleaned cat food cans of water, and an old large saucer, for under a large pot. I need to get a new large saucer, a ceramic one, as they're easier to clean. During the worst, I fill my garbage can lid (I inherited pails rather than flip-lid rolling cannisters) so the birds can drink and bathe.

Aug 05, 2021 06:24 PMTwo things: 1) Our chipmunks are savaging a couple succulents in our yard, too-----BUT we put out plenty of water, daily, and deliberately easy for them to access. 2) I once got the notion to bite off the stem of an Elephant ear (not same as the Elephant plant, the tiny leaves of which look related to a Jade plant). I didn't have my garden scissors w/ me and decided, "What the heck. I'll just chew off this stem w/ its yellowed Elephant ear leaf." I did so and **immediately** felt like the inside of my mouth was being attacked by a gadzillion tiny razors. Not my best garden experience, that's for sure. It took about an hour plus for the pain to subside. Needless to say, I have a whole lotta respect now for plants' defense mechanisms. And I keep my garden scissors handy at all times.

Aug 05, 2021 05:16 PMours also eat the "elephant plant" in our yard. its a very good source of water. I distinctly remember being told as a youngster that if I ever get stranded, find a succulent/ cactus as they hold water. its not the only place they can find water, but its an easy way to do it.

Aug 05, 2021 02:58 PMI wonder if that’s typical, or if it’s the only place the chipmunk could find water this year.
