A 12-year-old sustained severe head trauma after falling from a bicycle near Lompoc on Monday.

At 3:48 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to the area of Burton Mesa and Calle Quarta in Mission Hills. They discovered a child with major head trauma after falling from a bicycle.

Paramedics on the scene treated the child who was then transported by ground ambulance to Lompoc Hospital. From there a Calstar helicopter transported the patient to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The current condition of the child is unknown at this time.

The child was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Santa Barbara County firefighters encourage helmet use for all ages when riding bicycles.

Willful negligence on part of the parents to not provide necessary safety equipment for their child. Let's hope this child makes a full recovery without life long disability.

This is one of the problems with Goleta talking about bringing in rentals. Even if they provide a helmet with every ride it isn't necessarily a helmet for every rider. I saw kids riding double last time shared units were available. They must've used a parent or stolen credit card to gain access.

I realize this had nothing to do with a skate pare, but, helmets need to be required and mandatory in skate parks. While there are a number reasons for kids not wearing a helmet, the one that bugs me the most is the skater crowd. The majority of skaters (including pros) don't wear helmets. If the skater culture took on helmet wearing, you would stop seeing pre-teen kids ditching the helmets. Start with the Skate parks where this is enforceable.
