Channel City Horse Show History

By Don from Oregon

I’m an auction fan and recently acquired a trophy that was awarded at the 1965 Channel City Horse Show in Santa Barbara. Thanks to a couple postings on your website, I know the show was started in 1956, but I have found no information about the show after 1965.

I’d like to know when it was discontinued, merged with another event, or renamed. Thanks for your service to the Santa Barbara area community even though I live in Oregon.

Update from Don in Oregon

YinYang asked a question about the trophy. Here’s an answer, and more: Rather than the more traditional loving cup style, this trophy is a silver on copper cocktail shaker made by Meridan Company. A Channel City Horse Club medallion is affixed to one side. Below that is engraved “1965” and “HUNTERS-AMATEUR.” Probably the recipient and the trophy at some time moved to Oregon where the trophy was sold as part of an estate auction.

I lived and worked in Oxnard 1961-65, but don’t recall hearing SB referred to as Channel City. After a lot of internet searching, I finally made the connection — which now makes sense.
