I'm looking to switch to a different cell phone carrier—any recommendations on what cell phone companies provide the best 5G coverage in Santa Barbara and Goleta. I know I can find this data from the company's websites, but I would like to get feedback from edhat folks. :)

T-Mobile turned on their first Band n71 600 MHz signal downtown not that long ago. N71 is shared with extended range 4g LTE so it's not a new tower, it just simply got turned on. It's at 111 West Micheltorena Street

Hoho CS805, you must be the one mapping on Cell Mapper? I don’t yet have a 5G device but I believe 111 W Mich also has N41 equipment because on Sprint I see neighbor cells on B41 with PCI’s that match T-Mobile. It also looks like we are going to have plenty of Sprint “keep sites” so the merged network should be pretty amazing

No, not me mapping. I do check cell mapper semi-often though.

There is a 5G tower off the Mesa and it boost signal over to the Mission area. I use T-mobile 5G home internet (portable hotspot). Works great and cheaper then Cox Cable.

You are likely picking up n71 from downtown, not cliff drive. That tower hasn't turned 5g on yet (https://bit.ly/2PAAVQ5).

Even if you look at their coverage map, you can see the 5g hole there. https://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/coverage-map

I thought 5G was as bad as vaccines, wearing masks, space lasers and all that stuff. Did things change?

No one has offered advice about a specific company yet--I'd appreciate that, too! Have Verizon in the foothills behind the Riviera and the service is terrible here, have to go outdoors to get even two bars, use wifi indoors, so if the power goes off, we are pretty much phoneless. Don't have a 5G compatible phone yet, though...

I don't know anything about 5G, but as someone who talks to contractors who are at or driving to job sites all over the SB area, the anecdotal evidence is that no company's coverage is great.

I've read on Facebook that you won't get 5g until after getting either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

AT&T meets our needs everywhere we go locally, as well as home in North El Encanto area.

Corporations have given more than $50 million in recent years to state lawmakers who have seized on Donald Trump’s lies about a stolen 2020 election to push for new restrictions on the right to vote. Telecom-giant AT&T was the most prolific donor.

And even though "corporations are people, too" according to McConnell and his reptilian ilk, he just told CEOs protesting the voting restrictions to stay out of politics. What a bunch of unabashed hypocrites.

You can't even get a 4 G infil ( the tecnology we already have) because of a few acivistst that screach about percieved safety issues even though we are constantly bombarded with natural radiation in the atmosphere constantly. and people that have no understanding of the inverse square law.
They gang up at public meetings and boards and sabatoge updates to the system. Verizon has tried but the community wont' allow. It. no suprise everything is so political. Psudosience is popular around here in some small agressive groups that know how to work the system.

Lorax, are you speaking about 4g or 5g? We have 4g and we won't be getting 5g like most of the planet. There are reasons and scientific fact that prove 5g is bad...bad bad bad. No wonder the majority of world nations have banned it.

Unless you require exceptionally heavy data usage, you don't need 5G, according to an economically focused article I read a couple of months ago (NYT Dealbook?? How-To-Geeks?). It's being heavily marketed so that communications companies can justify raising rates on gullible consumers and peddling more expensive, new phones.

I used both Verizon and Consumer Cellular on the top of the Mesa ridge. Neither works well.

Sigh. To answer the question without ancillary hoo-haw, I've had Sprint forever and there were a lot of/are still some dead zones but things have improved in the last few months. I assume the merge with T-Mobile is providing better coverage. I've never had AT&T or Verizon but people I know that have Verizon say they have good reception and call quality pretty much everywhere. Verizon is also more expensive than Sprint.

there is no 5G on the majority of the planet. for very good, and proven reasons. As for good service? it seems everyone here has had mostly good if not great service regardless of the carrier. I use Boostmobile. My roommate uses Verizon. We both have Galaxy phones, we both cruise on 4g. She thinks she's getting 5g. Nope. We experience the same dead zones and both have the same quality of data stream, and phone connectivity. From two opposite carriers. I pay only $30 a month for unlimited while she pays over 100 a month for the same.
