Cathedral Oaks Pavement and Sidewalk Project Begins Monday

The Cathedral Oaks Road Pavement and Sidewalk Repair Project will begin construction next week starting on Monday, February 22, 2021. The project will take place in the same area as the recently completed Cathedral Oaks Road Settlement Repair Project, on Cathedral Oaks Road between Glen Annie Road and Los Carneros Road about half a mile west of the Cathedral Oaks and Los Carneros intersection. The work will consist of approximately 50 feet of sidewalk replacement, followed by approximately 200 feet of full width roadway pavement resurfacing. The project is expected to take approximately 2-3 weeks to complete.

City of Goleta Public Works Director Charlie Ebeling said, “The Public Works Department recently was able to take advantage of a relatively inexpensive subsurface repair method to fix the dip on Cathedral Oaks Road. We are excited to take advantage of the success and cost savings of that project to be able to follow it up with repairs to the sidewalk and roadway surface in this area. Staff worked very quickly and efficiently to get a contractor ready to complete the surface improvements shortly after the success of the dip repair project.”

City staff will be working with the contractor to minimize impacts to the public; however, the project will require closure of half of the roadway at a time in order to complete the pavement work. Traffic control will be in place and flaggers will be directing two-way traffic for the one open lane. Delays are expected so please plan accordingly while construction is occurring in this area. Work will take place Monday – Friday, from 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  1. Average Californian drives 10,000 miles/year. Average fuel efficiency is 25 MPG. Fuel tax is about $0.50/gallon in CA. That’s $200 year for combustion engine vehicles. Nice to know there’s now a “road improvement fee” for EVs/zero-emission, but it’s still not comparable to combustion engine vehicles that many people have to drive because they cannot afford a new car. I agree that there’s a lot of incentive to switch to a hybrid or electric, but there’s a cost barrier that puts these out of reach of most people—so they’re stuck with the exorbitant fuel taxes. Taxes are the burden of the middle class—always have been, and always will be.
