Caterpillar ID?

By an edhat reader

Can anyone identify this caterpillar? I’ve found the gulf fritillary in the same area as this one but this looks different.

  1. Wow. Lucky you, to have Mourning cloaks nearby. I LOVE these butterflies. Here’s a list of plants that these caterpillars feed on. I hope you can return the caterpillar to one of them. If the ‘pillar is ready to go into chrysalis, it will soon find its way to a suitable spot: “The caterpillar of the mourning cloak feeds in groups on the leaves of deciduous trees, including the willow, elm, hackberry, aspen, cottonwood, poplar, rose, birch, hawthorne, and mulberry.” (@SOAPBOX: Great job with the i.d.)
