Castillo Underpass Work to Require Detour of MTD Buses

Source: Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District

Caltrans will begin a construction project to improve conditions on the US Highway 101 undercrossing at Castillo Street on Monday, June 19. The project necessitates a full closure of the undercrossing between Highway 101 and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, including the southbound on/off ramps. As this is normally a route for MTD buses serving SBCC and the Mesa neighborhood, the Lines 5 and 15x will require detours and may experience delays.

Temporary stop closures:

  • Castillo at Montecito (currently served by Line 5 all day, and Line 15x in the afternoon)
  • Haley at Bath (currently served by Line 5 all day)

Temporary new stop:

  • Montecito at Bath

Current users of the Castillo and Montecito stop will be directed to a temporary stop on West Montecito Street at Bath Street, in front of The Neighborhood Bar & Grill. Current users of the Haley and Bath stop will be directed to the existing stop at De La Vina at Haley. Line 5 and 15x buses that would normally turn left from Cliff Drive/Montecito Street onto Castillo Street will continue straight on Montecito Street, right on Santa Barbara Street, left on Yanonali Street, left on Garden Street, entering northbound Highway 101. Line 5 buses will exit the freeway at Bath Street, serving the next stop at Haley and De La Vina. Line 15x will enter the northbound freeway at Garden Street and continue to Camino Real Marketplace, Isla Vista, and UCSB.

Line 5 buses normally turning right from De La Vina onto Haley will instead turn left on Haley Street, right on Garden Street, right on Yanonali Street, right on Santa Barbara Street, left on Montecito Street and back on route. These stop closures and detours will remain in effect until construction is completed, expected in late August.

MTD appreciates the patience of our riders as these detours may also delay other bus lines serving other areas of the transit system.
