A Carpinteria teenager has died from their injuries sustained in a traffic collision last week.

On July 3, Diego Lake Nieves was reportedly riding his motorcycle on Highway 101 northbound in Montecito when he was involved in a traffic collision with two vehicles near the San Ysidro offramp.

The Montecito Fire Department responded to the scene and stated the motorcyclist suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the hospital for further treatment.

Nieves passed away at the hospital the following day, July 4th.

The teenager grew up in Carpinteria with his grandparents, Sheryl Lake and Jim Tarantino. He was a 2023 graduate of Carpinteria High School and current student at Santa Barbara City College.

He also was an employee at Rori’s Artisanal Creamery and the Laughing Buddha, where he had worked all through high school.

His family has created an online fundraiser that will be used to create a scholarship fund in Nieves’ name for seniors at Carpinteria High School. Donations can be made at gofundme.com

“Diego was known for his bright smile and willingness to help others. He loved playing baseball, the beach, his family and his friends, some of which he knew since kindergarten,” the online fundraiser states. “Hopefully this can be an ongoing memorial to this amazing young man. He was loved by so many and will be desperately missed.”
