Thanks to a $32,000 donation from Chevron, which recently opened the West Coast Decommissioning Program office in Santa Barbara, Carpinteria High School science students will start the next academic year with some brand-new lab equipment, such as digital microscopes, spectrophotometer, digital scales, and hot plates.
“Chevron is committed to investing in STEM education by providing students and teachers with the tools and access to resources they need to be the innovators of the future,” said Sara Dearman, Public Affairs Representative at the energy company. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. “We are pleased to support Carpinteria High School’s purchase of equipment for its new science labs and are honored to partner with the Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF) and community to make this happen.”
Though there are brand new science facilities at CHS, much of the equipment is old, outdated, broken, or non-existent, reported Mandi de Witte, Science Department Chair and 2019 County Teacher of the Year.
“With this money we can outfit these beautiful new facilities with top of the line equipment to provide our students with the hands-on labs and experiments that will enrich their education, get them excited about science, and prepare them for careers and college majors in science. Thank you, Chevron!” added de Witte, who teaches AP Biology and Honors Biology.
Working behind the scenes, it was CEF that made this generous gift possible through its partnership with Chevron’s charitable giving program.
“We are thrilled to have Chevron join us as a supporter of education in Carpinteria. Their very substantial donation will go a long way to ensure all CHS students have access to top notch laboratory equipment,” said Casey Balch, board president of CEF.
