A Carpinteria man who worked as an in-home caregiver has been arrested on multiple felony charges related to alleged elder financial abuse, and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s detectives are asking the public for information about possible additional victims.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a family member of an elderly care recipient in Goleta reported suspicious activity on April 25, 2026, after noticing an unexplained cashed check and several missing checks from the victim’s account.

Detectives identified the suspect as 28-year-old Jose Olivares-Alonso of Carpinteria, who had been employed as the victim’s caregiver.

On April 29, 2026, investigators served a warrant at Olivares-Alonso’s residence in the 4700 block of Carpinteria Avenue. During the warrant service, deputies say Olivares-Alonso resisted arrest before being taken into custody.

He was booked into the Main Jail on suspicion of resisting arrest and multiple felony counts, including theft by a caretaker, burglary, forgery, and identity theft. He has since been released.

The case remains under investigation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Detectives believe additional victims may exist due to the suspect’s access to vulnerable individuals through his caregiving work. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Kiesow at 805-681-4150. Anonymous tips can be submitted via the Sheriff’s tip line at 805-681-4171 or online at SBSheriff.org.

The Sheriff’s Office commended the victim’s family for quickly reporting the irregularities and urged families to routinely monitor the finances and well-being of elderly or otherwise vulnerable loved ones.

Warning signs can include missing funds or checks, unusual purchases, and unexplained changes in banking habits. Early detection and reporting can play a critical role in preventing further victimization.
