On July 19, 2024, around 1:20 a.m., Santa Barabra Police Officers responded to the area of North La Cumbre Road and Via Lucero for a report of a carjacking that had just occurred.

Once on scene, officers learned that a taxicab driver had been carjacked by a passenger that they had picked up in the Downtown area of Santa Barbara. The suspect, later identified as 46-year-old Mario Guerrero-Ramirez, requested to be driven to a location on the city’s north end. Once at their destination, Guerrero-Ramirez threatened the driver with a knife and stole the taxi and the driver’s personal belongings.

Santa Barbara Police Officers started searching the area for Guerrero-Ramirez and the stolen taxicab. Shortly after the initial 9-1-1 call was received, officers located the suspect in the stolen cab in the 4500 block of Hollister Ave.

Guerrero-Ramirez fled from police in the cab, and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The suspect yielded to police on the southbound 101 freeway near the Sheffield exit and was taken into custody without incident.

Guerrero-Ramirez was transported and booked into the Santa Barbara County jail for carjacking, vehicle theft, driving on a suspended license, fleeing from officers, and a probation violation. He is currently being held without bail.

The victim was not injured during this incident, and their cab and personal belongings were returned to them.
