Today, Rep. Salud Carbajal voted to pass the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act. This marks the first time a chamber of Congress has voted to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level.

“For too long, our federal marijuana policy has lagged behind popular public opinion and the policies embraced by forward-thinking states like California. The MORE Act is a long overdue measure which decriminalizes marijuana at the federal level and expunges non-violent federal drug convictions.” said Rep. Carbajal. “Today, we voted to finally reverse decades of discriminatory marijuana policy, invest in the communities most affected by the failed war on drugs, and allow for a well-regulated industry to grow our economy.”
The MORE Act would make three important changes to federal law around marijuana:

  • Removes marijuana, or cannabis, from the list of federally controlled substances
  • Authorizes the provision of resources, funded by an excise tax on marijuana, to address the needs of communities that have been seriously impacted by the failed war on drugs.
  • Aims to increase the participation of communities of color in the burgeoning cannabis market
  • Expunges low-level federal marijuana convictions and arrests

Rep. Salud Carbajal represents California’s 24th congressional district, encompassing Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and part of Ventura County.

I'm all for it but disgusted the House spent time today on legislating cannabis and keeping large cats in captivity, just the priorities we should be focusing on with you know, a worldwide pandemic, record unemployment's, public schools closed for nearly a year and an economy tatters. Glad Pelosi has her priorates straight.

McConnell has rejected the bipartisan bill that was developed by his Senators, and any bill coming out of the House. What do you want Pelosi to do, capitulate to the Trump-McConnell agenda entirely? They already gave up significant help to the cities and states going bankrupt. Propopsed bill is down from 2.2T to 900B. I guess that doesn't seem like a compromise to you?

So if you have yo use the restroom, do you stop everything else you plan to do that day till you use the restroom? Cause wow you are not efficient Voice of Reason. They have a lot of things to handle, im glad they arent waiting around till the pandemic is over to legislate on the tons of other things we have to handle also.

...meanwhile his district and many others are plagued with "homeless-vagrants" starting fires, and creating pollution and blight- I would venture to guess most are drug /alcohol addicts ... But yeah, good job Salud.... (What do we pay these clowns for...?)

I agree coast. The solution isn't to legalize more drugs its to go to war with the cartels who bring most of the drugs in. The legalization of Marijuana actually makes the opioid epidemic worse since the cartels are now shifting to manufacturing/distributing those instead of weed.

This might be the only way to get a handle on cannabis cultivation in SB County. Once it is legal everywhere, they will start growing it in places where land is cheap, just like every other crop, and SB can go back to expensive $ intensive crops like grapes. McConnell is already a big supporter of the hemp industry in Kentucky.

Pitmix I don't think you understand why people are going weed here.... its because its the right climate, I would suggest taking a moment to think critically before you post. I know its challenging but it can be done

Didn’t that logic already fail? When Ca legalized pot they said it would stop the dangerous smuggling from Mexico. I’m still hearing about pangas on the beach and illegal farms in the mountains.

Sail, wait until they are growing it in a bunch of anti-tax states with cheap land like Kentucky. Black market pot is only competitive now because the costs of growing legal pot and the taxes make it really expensive.
