The southbound US Highway 101 on-ramp at Turnpike Road remains closed due to a sinkhole located between the on-ramp and the right shoulder of the southbound lanes. This sinkhole was discovered on Dec. 27, followed by the closure of the on-ramp to maintain public safety.
Caltrans began excavation work under an emergency contract three weeks ago and has discovered additional damage to the deteriorated corrugated steel and reinforced concrete pipe 30 to 40 feet below the surface. This will result in additional excavation near southbound US 101 to complete these repairs.
Construction will continue seven days a week from 7 am until 5 pm. It is anticipated this ramp will re-open in mid to late February, weather permitting.
In addition, the No. 3 (right) southbound lane of US 101 at Turnpike Road will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 30 from 9 am until 2 pm to allow for the movement of protective barrier and traffic safety devices.
Motorists headed southbound may enter US 101 at South Patterson Avenue or State Street. Delays are not expected to exceed 10 minutes. The contractor for this $1 million project is Granite Construction of Santa Barbara, CA.
Just wait until the next typical Cal Trans project starts – the one year closure of the Gaviota Rest Stops.
Seems like at least one of those rest stops is always closed.
Hopefully will not turn into another endless Caltrans project like the 101 widening through Carpenteria. Will we ever see them widen the 101 through Montecito in our lifetimes?
RHS, you obviously either know a Cal Trans employee very well or love driving past a project only to see one person working and six to 10 standing around jawing with each other or on their smartphones. Yes, they eventually get the work done, especially when it’s an “emergency” like the sinkhole that keeps the In n Out customers from leaving after their meals heading south. Wait for the Gaviota rest stop shut down for a full year and the Montecito widening project. “Film at 11”
I love Cal Trans. But as a 3rd shift worker I gotta say they could use spotlights at night to do the work instead of shutting down a major highway at rush hour. I’ll glady slow down to a safe speed at 2am for a project as opposed to a shutdown at the morning rush hour when I’m trying to get home for a quick nap before I have to pick up my kids at school and then deal with completely stopped traffic in the evening/late afternoon rush hour trying to get another nap before my next shift starts. You never know if it will add 30-60 minutes to your day. But whatever, my kids can almost drive and they can deal with it then. I respect the hard work Cal Trans or any road work crew does no matter what.
