California could face a roughly $160 million gap in federal transportation funding after the Trump administration announced it would withhold money from the state, citing the state’s failure to revoke thousands of improperly issued commercial trucking licenses.

The move marks a renewed escalation in ongoing tensions between California officials and the Trump administration.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the funding freeze, saying the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued a final determination after California missed a January 5 deadline to cancel more than 17,000 non-domiciled Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs).

Federal officials say the licenses were issued in violation of federal safety regulations and should have been revoked months earlier. The withheld funds are tied to major highway and infrastructure programs, placing direct pressure on California’s transportation budget.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, California officials committed in November to revoke every improperly issued license within 60 days and to work with federal authorities to address the system failures that allowed the licenses to be issued.

Federal authorities said Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration failed to meet that commitment, leaving thousands of drivers with noncompliant licenses on the road.

Duffy described the funding freeze as a public safety issue rather than a political one, arguing that federal law requires states to correct safety violations within agreed-upon timelines.

The decision follows findings from a nationwide audit that highlighted widespread problems in California’s non-domiciled CDL program. The audit found that more than 20,000 active licenses were issued in violation of federal regulations.

In several cases, licenses were issued with expiration dates extending beyond a driver’s lawful presence documentation, according to the findings. Federal officials also cited instances in which individuals received endorsements to operate passenger or school buses even after their legal status had expired.

The licensing dispute comes amid rising tensions between Governor Newsom’s office and the Trump administration. In a Truth Social post, former President Donald Trump alleged widespread corruption in California and claimed that a federal fraud investigation had been launched, without providing specific details.

Newsom’s office pushed back, stating there is no confirmed investigation and no evidence supporting the claims. The governor’s office said California’s finances are subject to regular audits and oversight and that existing enforcement mechanisms are already in place.

Separately, the Trump administration has proposed pausing more than $10 billion in federal funding for five Democratic-led states, including California. The proposed freeze has raised concerns about potential impacts on social programs such as child care assistance and cash aid for low-income families.

    • Oh, you are worried about fraud all of a sudden? Trump pardoned fraudsters who took the taxpayers for billions of dollars, but that is something you would defend.

President Trump granted pardons and commutations to individuals convicted of various frauds, including Devon Archer (defrauding Sioux Nation), Michael Milken (securities fraud), Eliyahu Weinstein (Ponzi scheme), George Gilmore (tax/loan fraud), and health care executives, often in his final days in office, which drew criticism for potentially undermining restitution and justice for victims of financial crimes against the government or individuals.

    • BASIC – your kind needs to find something new to cry about other than this train thing. You really don’t care about “waste or abuse” unless it’s by someone who does not support child rapists, releasing criminals and drug dealers into our streets and celebrating the death of US citizens by untrained, rogue jackboots.

You see, you are totally OK with wasting our tax dollars as long as it’s to hurt someone born differently than you. That’s exactly what you boil down to.

Nothing that you or your kind supports is for the benefit of the vulnerable members of our society. Not a single thing. Healthcare? No. Childcare? No. Hunger? No. The environment? No. Justice? No. Child rapists? Yes! Hurting tax paying immigrants? Yes! Polluting our air and water even more? Oh hell yes! History will remember you people.

  1. The reckless spending pushed through by democrats have given California $256 Billion in unfunded pension liabilities and $1.6 Trillion Dollars in total unfunded liabilities. At what point will democrats acknowledge the emperor has no clothes?

    • ZIPS – your kind, yes, your kind (we are not all “Americans,” some are and some are fascist racists) has based their entire world view on blatant and easily verifiable lies from a POS trash man who’s admitted (proudly) to sexually assaulting women, has been found by a judge in a court of law to have raped a woman, has been convicted on 34 counts of fraud (LYING) and now does everything he can (including invading sovereign nations) to protect child rapists.

Your kind have no bearing in reality or facts. You live in a fantasy world of lies. Everything you say/stand for is either an outright lie or another example of projection as you commit the very acts you accuse others of without any basis in fact.

      Despicable.
