A sudden vegetation fire sparked in Santa Maria Valley on Thursday afternoon, prompting immediate response from local fire departments and affecting traffic flow in the area.
The blaze, which began at approximately 3:42 p.m, was reported in the convergence area of Highway 135, Highway 1, and Graciosa Road. Upon arrival, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and Vandenberg Fire discovered a quarter-acre of vegetation fiercely ablaze, and swiftly took action to prevent its spread.
Concerned for public safety due to diminishing visibility from the billowing smoke, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was called to the scene to implement traffic controls. Southbound Highway 135 faced shutdowns as a precaution to protect motorists from the hazardous conditions caused by the fire.
Firefighting teams worked diligently to halt the fire’s advancement, succeeding in their efforts by 4:40 p.m. Helicopter 964 and bulldozer squads were effectively released from duty shortly after the forward progress of the fire was stopped.
When the smoke cleared, an estimated 7.29 acres of land had succumbed to the flames. Throughout the ordeal, traffic management by the CHP resulted in only one southbound lane of Highway 1/135 being closed to the public, specifically to the south of the North Y interchange.
Officials remained vigilant on the scene to execute mop-up operations, addressing any remaining hot spots to prevent potential reignition. Although the cause of the fire is currently under investigation, fire personnel have efficiently contained what could have developed into a larger threat to the surrounding community.
