A small brush fire broke out in the 4400 block of Hollister Thursday morning, believed to be started inside a homeless camp.

Santa Barbara County fire crews arrived at 10:39 a.m. and found smoke showing from Hollister Ave, just north of the Creekside restaurant and south of the Juvenile Hall area. The fire was approximately 200 yards off the roadway and was found in a large homeless encampment, said Captain Dave Zaniboni.

A homeless man was on scene and admitted to starting the fire accidentally while he was cooking. That man was taken into custody by Sheriff’s Deputies, said Zaniboni.

The fire was kept to a small area inside the camp, approximately 20 x 20 feet and it only burned belongings in the camp. Fire crews will remain on scene to mop up the area.
