Brush Fire Started by Homeless Camp in Goleta

A small brush fire broke out in the 4400 block of Hollister Thursday morning, believed to be started inside a homeless camp.
Santa Barbara County fire crews arrived at 10:39 a.m. and found smoke showing from Hollister Ave, just north of the Creekside restaurant and south of the Juvenile Hall area. The fire was approximately 200 yards off the roadway and was found in a large homeless encampment, said Captain Dave Zaniboni.
A homeless man was on scene and admitted to starting the fire accidentally while he was cooking. That man was taken into custody by Sheriff's Deputies, said Zaniboni.
The fire was kept to a small area inside the camp, approximately 20 x 20 feet and it only burned belongings in the camp. Fire crews will remain on scene to mop up the area.

Jan 25, 2018 11:47 AMThis is out of control. How are homeless encampments allowed to exist for years in our community?

Jan 26, 2018 10:55 AMBecause it's easier for local government to have a blind eye to it than do something about it. It's getting worse but have no fear, Cathy is going to make it all better. Bahhhhhaaaa....

Jan 25, 2018 12:22 PMThere's a well worn path along the row of trees, up from Hollister, and I've seen homeless walking the path many times as I drive by on Hollister.

Jan 25, 2018 04:22 PMConstant problem by Dearborn and the railroad tracks. They have started at least 2 fires over there near two condo complexes and a apartment complex. Will spend $$$$ to board my cat when I go on vacation this summer, as I am terrified to leave her alone in my condo. Goleta Police aren't very useful. It's becoming more and more scary to live in SB/Goleta.

Jan 28, 2018 05:37 AMThe fact that you can see large shack from the freeway made of wood! Its not just a tent or two. These are piles of garbage that are put together to form a tiny home. One would suspect that is because they want to get more insuation to keep the heat from their fire. I cant get a permit to do a tiny addition much less one for a wood burning fireplaces but these winners are allowed to post up on property thats not theirs and start fires and construct to their hearts desire... there needs to be monthly purges at the very least. Some places probably more frequent
