Brush Fire Near Los Olivos Temporarily Shut Down Highway 101 Friday Afternoon

A brush fire sparked on Friday afternoon along northbound Highway 101 near Los Olivos led to significant traffic delays and a coordinated firefighting effort.

The fire, reported around 2:41 p.m. and dubbed the “Olivos Fire,” ignited in dry grass south of Highway 154 and quickly spread, eventually burning approximately 10 acres on both sides of the highway.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department, along with additional resources, responded to contain the fire.

Drivers along the route experienced hours-long delays as officials closed Highway 101 in both directions, north of State Route 246, due to the escalating situation.

Initially reported as a two-acre fire, it quickly grew as dry brush and gusty conditions fueled its spread. By 3:15 p.m., the fire had been upgraded to a second-alarm fire, prompting additional resources to be brought in, including ASU Copter 964, a firefighting helicopter.

Firefighters worked aggressively to establish containment lines and slow the fire’s progression. By 3:56 p.m., less than an hour after the second-alarm status, officials confirmed the forward progress of the fire was stopped, preventing further spread.

To ensure public safety, authorities closed Highway 101 in both directions, creating significant traffic backups. Vehicles were at a standstill for hours as crews worked to suppress flames and clear debris from the roadway.

The closure, which extended for several miles, affected Friday afternoon and evening commuters as travelers were diverted to alternative routes. Highway 101 remained shut until approximately 8:00 p.m., after firefighters successfully contained the fire and cleared the scene.
