Bright Flashing Lights?

Last night at approximately 9pm (perhaps a bit before), while I was outside searching for my cat, I noticed a series of sporadic bright white concentrated flashes in the slightly north sky overhead. I am aware that satellites rotate and reflect the sunlight in well-timed flashes as they race across the sky, but these flashes ranged from dull to very bright (like an explosion). Nothing was audible.

They were not low altitude, so naturally I initially suspected a rotating satellite. The only thing is that it seemingly changed direction from heading east to northwest to north and then west to east. Once I discounted a satellite, I raced inside and got my family. They all witness this as well. Eventually it headed east and eventually faded out of sight. Anyone see this?

Bright Flashing Lights?

Any information on if/who set up candle lanterns in severe fire season and hot weather? If caught, they should be sentenced to working sun-up to sun-down at a fire base camp w/o no a.c.--maybe KP?--and sleeping in pup tents the next time there's a fire. (Couldn't trust their judgment out fighting it.) Serving the haggard, exhausted, red-eyed, smoke-streaked fire-fighters coming through the food line might make the stupid jerks realize how low they were to put the lives of others at risk.

It was candle lanterns let off from around Elings Park or Hendry's but not off coast. We saw about 20 of them shoot up in the air like missiles (from our perspective) without sound. Very creepy to see at night. They got to their highest altitude about 2 minutes later and drifted around a bit before fortunately burning out. I called family in Goleta and sounded like a weirdo asking if they saw what was in the air. They could not see it because they were not high enough. The use of candle lanterns is dumb as anything in a state that is currently fighting a fire that has substantial loss of property and life. I used to live in places that this would not be an issue. Get a clue or leave please.

The Orionid meteor shower is active, but wouldn't have been anything spectacular, especially at that time. They are sparse, but tend to be fast and bright because they are pieces of Halley's Comet, in a retrograde orbit.

I have enjoyed the meteor shower before sunrise, between Orion and Sirius. I've see a few shooting stars each morning of for the past few days.

Belief in alien visitations can be a sign of a detached frontal cortex.

Bright Flashing Lights?

Absolutely, but thinking that they visit here is ignorant.

Actually thinking that there is no one / thing else in the entire Universe is beyond absurd.

Did you then lose track of time and wake up this morning with a splitting headache and a very sore ... ahem ... backside?

Flashing bright lights can be a sign/indicator of a detached retina. Just sayin'.

Did you not read the comment below from a parent of a young kid who saw the same thing at the same time? Might help to read before posting snark. Just sayin'

Are you sure you weren't actually looking at the high country of our mountain range? We have a good number of nighttime mountain bike riders that have absolutely amazing lights these days. I live along the trail and every once in a while it freaks me out until I realize what it is. The direction of travel and brightness is all over the place due to the switchbacks on the trails.

My son (11) saw this in that exact time frame. Said bright flashing light from window on mesa facing mountains. I thought he was seeing things.
