Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara Reopens Downtown

City and County Officials, Congressman Carbajal,  Club Alumni, Business and Civic Leaders Turn Out to Support ‘The Club’

More than one hundred community members came to the Downtown Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara on East Cañón Perdido Street to show their support of this iconic local youth facility last week.

Attendees Club Alumni who attended the original club 70 years ago, city council and county supervisor members, school district officials, and Congressman Salud Carbajal.

“I am looking forward to having this Club open for our youth,” said City Councilmember Alejandra Gutierrez. “This Club has done so much for our youth.”

It was an afternoon of BBQ, camaraderie and appreciation and support for everything this Club has done for our local youth since first opening its doors as a Boys and Girls Club in 1938.

“This Club has passion and it is a joy that will again be serving our youth,” said County Supervisor Laura Capps.

New executive director Mark Alvarado was introduced to the community

“This Community Open House event demonstrated that the legacy and history of the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Bárbara must continue,” said Alvarado.

“Our 84 year history as a Boys and Girls Club was affirmed today by the dozens of community members and dignitaries who attended. Their show of support is a mandate to restore the original Boys and Girls Club in the City of Santa Bárbara. Our community needs us.”

The ceremony concluded with an exciting ribbon cutting with everyone taking part as the Downtown Club is now officially reopened.
