Update: The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Roberto Perez Juarez of Oxnard.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau has determined the death to be accidental.
The body of a teenager was discovered in the Santa Ynez River off Paradise Road in Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon.
At 1:48 p.m., crews from Santa Barbara County Fire, Santa Barbara City, and a Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue Water Team responded to the incident at the Falls Day Use area.
This area is located near Red Rocks and is within the Los Padres National Forest and includes a picnic area, sandy beaches, and swimming holes in the river.
The body of a 19-year-old male was recovered in deep water. Authorities believe he was in the water for over an hour, according to County Fire.
The identity of the teenager and other details surrounding the incident have yet to be released.
The County Fire Department reminds the public about the dangers of swimming in the Falls Day Use Area.
Avoid swimming alone, do not get in the water if you are not an experienced swimmer, stay within the designated safe zones, avoid alcohol and drugs during water activities, wear a life jacket, and do not dive headfirst into unknown waters, the County Fire Department states.
