[Update: Lompoc mother Ashlee Buzzard entered a “not guilty” plea in the murder of her 9-year-old daughter, Melodee Buzzard, on December 26, 2025. Read the latest update here.]

The body of missing Lompoc 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard has been recovered and her mother has been arrested, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.

Sheriff Bill Brown held a press conference Tuesday afternoon alerting the public to “major developments” in the missing person investigation.

Sheriff Brown stated the body of Melodee Buzzard was found in a rural area outside Caineville, Utah on December 6.

He stated the evidence clearly indicates the girl’s mother, Ashlee Buzzard is responsible for the “heinous crime.” Brown went on to call the it premeditated, calculated, cold-blooded, and criminally sophisticated.

“This is an extraordinarily tragic case involving the murder of a child by the very person she relied upon and trusted the most,” Sheriff Brown said. “While maternal filicide is rare and difficult to comprehend, the evidence in this case clearly indicates a calculated, deliberate, and ruthless act.”

Before Tuesday’s update, Melodee was reportedly last seen in a Lompoc surveillance footage camera with her mother, Ashlee, on October 7, 2025. An updated timeline showed that Melodee was actually last seen on October 9 with her mother at a stop near the Colorado-Utah border after the pair took a sudden road trip from their home in Lompoc and went as far as Nebraska.

Sheriff Brown stated that investigators believe Melodee was killed shortly after that October 9 sighting.

Melodee’s body was discovered on December 6 by two passersby taking photos near East State Route 24 in Wayne County. Sheriff Brown was notified two days later by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office of their findings.

Sheriff Brown stated that Melodee died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Due to the state of decomposition, DNA confirmation was needed to positively identify the remains.

Melodee’s remains were positively identified on December 22. Her mother Ashlee was arrested the following day on December 23.

Sheriff Brown stated they do not have possession of the murder weapon and have not established a motive for the killing. However, cartridge cases found at the crime scene in Utah were positively linked to a cartridge case found at Ashlee’s home during an October 30 search warrant.

Investigators believe Ashlee acted alone. She is currently being held on first-degree murder charges in the Santa Barbara County Jail without bail.

Numerous sources report that Melodee’s family members claim they hadn’t physically seen here in over a year and described Ashlee as “extremely mentally unstable.”

The Beginning of the Investigation

The Sheriff’s Office began investigating on October 14, 2025, when a school administrator reported Melodee’s prolonged absence. Deputies attempted to locate Melodee and her mother, Ashlee’s residence in the 500 block of Mars Avenue in Lompoc, but were only able to speak with Ashlee who provided no verifiable explanation for Melodee’s whereabouts.

A search of the residence confirmed that Melodee was not there. Ashlee has remained uncooperative and has not confirmed Melodee’s location or welfare, the Sheriff’s Office has stated repeatedly throughout their investigation.

“From the moment Melodee Buzzard was reported missing, Sheriff’s detectives pursued every investigative lead with urgency, discipline, and compassion. Detectives worked simultaneously on multiple fronts, including continuous tracking of Ashlee Buzzard’s movements, while other investigators focused on the exhaustive collection and analysis of physical, digital, and forensic evidence,” the Sheriff’s Office states.

“Throughout the investigation, detectives encountered deliberate efforts to prevent them from locating Melodee and uncovering the truth. Despite these obstacles, investigators remained methodical and relentless, relying on evidence when cooperation was withheld and overcoming barriers placed in their path. Their unwavering commitment ultimately led to today’s arrest,” the Sheriff’s Office states.

Timeline of Key Investigative Milestones

While this remains an active criminal case, investigators shared the following confirmed milestones:

  • October 14, 2025: A school administrator reported Melodee’s prolonged absence. Deputies responded to the family’s residence in the 500-block of Mars Avenue in Lompoc and contacted her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, who provided no verifiable explanation for Melodee’s whereabouts.
  • October 15, 2025: Detectives served a search warrant at the Mars Avenue residence. Investigators learned Ashlee Buzzard had recently rented a vehicle, and surveillance images showed her and Melodee at the rental office wearing wigs, apparently to conceal their identities. These images were released publicly on October 22.
  • October 24, 2025: Detectives released a detailed travel timeline documenting a multi-state round-trip travel route that included California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, and Nebraska with a return route including Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and California. Investigators learned Ashlee Buzzard switched license plates and backed into gas stations to avoid surveillance cameras. Melodee was last seen on video with Ashlee on October 9, 2025, near the Colorado-Utah border. Investigators now believe Melodee was murdered shortly after that point.
  • October 30, 2025: Sheriff’s detectives and the FBI Evidence Response Team served additional search warrants at the Mars Avenue residence, at a storage unit, and upon the rental vehicle. An expended cartridge case was recovered from the residence, and a live round of similar ammunition was located in the vehicle. The cartridge case was submitted to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives for entry into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, a firearms-related evidence database.
  • December 6, 2025: The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in Utah responded to a report of a decomposed body discovered off the roadway near the 3300-block of East State Route 24 in a remote area of Wayne County.
  • December 8, 2025: Wayne County authorities notified the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office of the unidentified remains. The decedent was determined to be female and had died from gunshot wounds to the head.
  • December 17, 2025: Cartridge cases recovered in Utah were compared by the ATFE and determined to be linked to the cartridge case recovered from the Mars Avenue residence.
  • December 22, 2025: FBI Crime Lab analysis confirmed that the remains discovered in Utah were a familial DNA match to Ashlee Buzzard.
  • December 23, 2025: Ashlee Lynn Buzzard was arrested for the murder of daughter, Melodee Buzzard.

Surveillance Footage Release

Last month investigators released surveillance images of Ashlee and Melodee that were captured at a rental car location in Lompoc at the start of the road trip on October 7, 2025.

Both Ashlee and Melodee appear to be wearing wigs with Melodee’s appearing darker and straighter than her natural hair. Melodee Buzzard is described as a 9-year-old female, approximately 4 feet 6 inches tall, 60 pounds, with brown curly hair and brown eyes.

Ashlee Buzzard Previously Arrested on Unrelated Charges

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office previously announced they arrested the mother of the missing 9-year-old girl from Lompoc on unrelated charges.

On Friday, November 7, detectives arrested 40-year-old Ashlee Buzzard on charges unrelated to the ongoing search for her missing daughter, Melodee Buzzard.

Detectives learned of a recent incident where Ashlee prevented a victim from leaving a location, against their will which constitutes false imprisonment. This crime is not connected to the ongoing search for Melodee, however, detectives are unable to fully outline the crime as it would impede their ongoing investigation, the Sheriff’s Office states.

Detectives arrested Ashlee on Friday on a warrant for a felony charge of false imprisonment. She will be booked at the Northern Branch Jail with bail set at $100,000. Her booking photo does not meet the criteria for public release and will not be distributed, the Sheriff’s Office states.

“Although this arrest occurred during the course of the missing person investigation, it is not directly related to Melodee’s disappearance. Sheriff’s detectives remain fully focused on locating Melodee and confirming her safety,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.

Partner Agencies

This investigation required extensive coordination across multiple jurisdictions. The Sheriff’s Office recognized the contributions of numerous partner agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, California Department of Justice, Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office, Santa Barbara County Child Welfare Services, Lompoc Unified School District, Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue, and multiple law enforcement agencies across Utah, Colorado, and Nebraska.

Community and Family Acknowledgment

“The loss of Melodee Buzzard is heartbreaking,” Sheriff Brown said. “We hoped against hope that she would be found alive. This outcome is devastating.”

The Sheriff’s Office extended its deepest condolences to the Meza and Buzzard families and thanked members of the public and media nationwide for their engagement, tips, and continued attention to the case.

“This investigation does not end here,” Sheriff Brown said. “We remain committed to working closely with prosecutors to ensure justice is pursued with integrity, care, and compassion. Melodee deserved a far better life, and she will never be forgotten.”

Because this case is now proceeding through the court system, additional details are limited at this time, the Sheriff’s Office states.

    • So horrific, and unbearably tragic. We’ve been hoping against hope (as I now notice you and Brown also say) that little Melodee would be found alive and the whole family could get psychiatric help. Guess it’s lucky that 38.295, -111.041 is a scenic spot, in that photographers discovered the scene while evidence was still there. Our hearts go out to the family.

  1. This poor, sweet, beautiful girl, who I’m sure had nothing but love and trust for her Mom. I hope her spirit knows that most people are actually good humans, and that she did nothing to deserve what that monster of a mother did to her. Nothing but big love and peace for Melodee. For her mother, on the other hand? May she have the torment she deserves for the rest of her days.
