Authorities have released the identity of the body discovered in Alameda Park in Santa Barbara last week.

The identity of the man is 65-year-old David Wayne Neal, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office also stated he was a transient living in Santa Barbara.

Last Friday, January 16, 2026, the Santa Barbara Police Department stated that at approximately 10:00 a.m., public safety personnel including police, fire and paramedics were dispatched to the area of Alameda Park in response to a report of an unresponsive male.

Upon arrival, a 65-year-old male now identified as Neal, was found lying on the ground near a bench on the south side of the park. He was unresponsive and did not have a pulse.

Public safety personnel immediately began life-saving measures. Despite approximately 20 minutes of medical intervention, Neal could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

    • Yes. But the obstinacy is not just Congress. This stuff has to be addressed on the local level and so many NIMBY’s object to any realistic remedy. No small houses in Pacific Palisades. No shelter housing in suburbia. No resources centers in downtown Santa Barbara. No toilets on the streets for transients. And the money allocated to county agencies from self-imposed voter approved taxes are too often used to “study” the problem and seldom used to actually build facilities and start programs to intervene. Etc.

  1. If you want to help those living on the streets, best to leave the finger pointing to someone else. An easy start is to simply purchase and hand out socks. Yes….socks. If you do not want to hand them out yourself for whatever reason, please donate to any organization that is set up to do so. If you’re not sure what to buy, here is a good start (with Amazon links):
