I was pleased to find this visitor at one my birdbaths yesterday. Can any serious birders tell us which particular species this is... Coopers, Red-shouldered, etc?

That rounded tail suggests it's a Cooper's. Lovely, isn't it?

Agree, with the new photo of the tail, definitely a Cooper's.

Lovely, indeed! The nervous House Finches that also use the baths would beg to differ. :-)

I have a bowl of water on my porch for the dogs and birds often dive bomb it for a quick dip and drink. Since the fire started I have been putting fresh shallow pans of water out for the birdies daily. Poor things have to fly around in all this ash and need a place for a bath and a drink. If you can do it too I am sure you will make some feathered friends happy!

Whatever kind of hawk it is, it sure is a beauty. Great picture of it, thanks.

Looks more like a Sharp-shinned. Eyes more in the center of the head with more blue gray upper parts, thicker legs and no contrast between head and nape. Could tell fore sure if we saw the tip of the tail.

Found a decapitated dove in my patio. I assume I have something like this around as well.

Looks very Cooper's to me.

Red tail hawks are my favorite bird of prey!
