Bill to Teach Students How to Spot Fake News

Source: Office of Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson

Legislation by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) to ensure students in California’s public schools learn how to assess media sources critically, and act ethically, responsibly, and safely online passed off the Senate Floor today on a 27 to 10 vote and now heads to the Governor’s desk.

Senate Bill 947 establishes a state-based advisory committee comprised of educators, administrators, researchers, and parents who will work with oversight by the Superintendent of Public Instruction to develop best practices, resources, and models for instruction of digital citizenship and media literacy.

Among other things, the advisory group will help develop strategies for school districts to implement instructional tools on digital citizenship and media literacy, including professional development and training for educators and administrators.

“While technology holds great promise for enhancing how children learn, young people need support and training on how to navigate their digital world, particularly when it comes to cyberbullying, privacy, digital footprints, and fake news,” said Senator Jackson. “SB 947 will ensure that digital citizenship, internet safety, and media literacy become part of the state’s basic educational goals and learning requirements.”

SB 947 is supported by Common Sense Kids Action. “With an educator community of more than 300,000 teachers, Common Sense supports kids and families as they navigate the digital age. We are in full support of Senator Jackson’s SB 947, which will ultimately empower students to make ethical choices when it comes to technology use. By identifying best practices for the teaching of digital citizenship in K-12 schools, SB 947 is an important first step in establishing a statewide curriculum for kids in today’s connected world,” said Elizabeth Galicia, Vice President of Common Sense Kids Action.

Jackson represents the 19th Senate District, which includes all of Santa Barbara County and western Ventura County.

  1. Let me decode this for you – we are going to tell you to ignore anything that isn’t part of the far left agenda as “fake news”, and anything positive about anyone we don’t like is “fake news”. God I cannot stand this woman, just hearing her name is like nails on a chalkboard. When will she be voted out?

  2. Haha except – I’m not a right winger – so the above comment is a perfect example of the truth of the decoding. You labeled, and then called it a “lie” based on your (mis) labelling. Just like this bill aims to do.

  3. “How can a super-majority Democrat legislature teach anyone about anything.”
This is an example of extremely stupid hyperbole, not critical thinking. Aside from the obvious fact that anyone, even Factotum, is capable of teaching someone about something, it’s teachers, not the legislature, who will do the teaching.
“Critical thinking is already built into public education skill sets. ”
Another example of non-critical thinking. The bill is about “develop best practices, resources, and models for instruction of digital citizenship and media literacy”, and “help develop strategies for school districts to implement instructional tools on digital citizenship and media literacy”, not critical thinking per se, and current ” public education skill sets” are not relevant.
” If they are not already doing the job, fire the whole lot of them.”
Another example of complete lack of critical thinking. Some educators might be “doing the job” and some might not; it would be extremely stupid to “fire the whole lot of them”. And again, this bill is not about “the job” of teaching existing ” public education skill sets”.
“Note to Hannah-Beth Jackson: critical thinking is not just learning to be critical about conservatives or libertarians.
Another example of lack of critical thinking — a strawman fallacy. The bill is not about “just learning to be critical about conservatives or libertarians”.
“Reading widely is the best way to teach yourself about critical thinking.”
Not if you view everything through an ideological lens, or are stupid.

  4. P.S. ” Reading widely is the best way to teach yourself about critical thinking. ”
We’re talking about K-12. Even if Factotum’s extremely uncritical thought were correct, “reading widely” is not common among that population.

  5. I find the headline of this info article misleading. ‘Fake news’ is not news. It is a lie. Plain and simple. Trump and his cronies came up with this title ‘fake news’ as part of their anti-legitimate newsmedia campaign. Legitimate news outlets write the ‘news’, based on facts. Fox is all opinion, an ‘interpretation’. Facts are true events and occurrences. Events that happen. Reality based. No analysis in a true news article. If you read the press release, HBJ seems to understand this and wants to make sure our students also understand the difference between truth/facts and spin.

  6. They ALL lie to get YOU to choose a side so they can further their own agendas. Do you really think these people care about you? HBJ stay out of the students brains they don’t need to be brainwashed into your party…

  7. I just watched “V is for Vendetta” so the thought of the government setting up a criteria for school kids to determine which news is reliable or not is way too big brother for me. If news sources or reported items are deemed to be a threat to their power then there is incentive for this government committee to make their logic tree to define it as fake. Once something can be defined as fake, then the next step is call for censorship. Maybe they should encourage a critical reading of 1984 instead.

  8. I had to follow up on your comment because in no way was the movie antisemitic. The movie is about overturning totalitarian power. The movie used an image from the Holocaust, and that caused some board to flag it as “anti semitic”. That board considers the use of any image from the Holocaust as trivializing it, therefore they flagged it that way. It’s all about a totalitarian leader controlling the government, controlling the news, controlling entertainment, and controlling schools where no dissenting thought or action is allowed. It’s gritty and not for the faint of heart.

  9. The Democratic congressmen are given a quota of 20 (I think that is the number) bills to proffer each session. Clearly they have run out of good ideas.
Yes, centralized control of how people are to think (that is where we are going) is tyranny.

  10. “I had to follow up on your comment because in no way was the movie antisemitic. ”
No one is talking about a movie, nitwit. This isn’t posted under your comment about the movie … learn how to use this site. Learn how to use a computer. Learn *something*.

  11. I saw the headline for this article and my instant thought was, I’ll bet any $$$ that “Taxin’ Jackson” is behind this BS. Turns out I was right. God, is there anything that she can’t keep her meat hooks off of? And I say this as a registered Democrat. Suggestion for Hanna Beth: Go away. Just…go away.

  12. What do we pay and elect politicians into office for…? Here’s a clue Hanna-Beth… DO YOUR JOB!
Clean up and rebuild our crumbling INFRASTRUCTURE…!
Clean up and audit our corrupt and bankrupt WELFARE /SOCIAL SERVICES programs…
We don’t need more mindless and B>S> legislation – MORE B>S> “laws” that are never enforced…
…And people wonder why politicians are SO OUT OF TOUCH with REALITY…

  13. How can a super-majority Democrat legislature teach anyone about anything. Critical thinking is already built into public education skill sets. If they are not already doing the job, fire the whole lot of them. Note to Hannah-Beth Jackson: critical thinking is not just learning to be critical about conservatives or libertarians. Reading widely is the best way to teach yourself about critical thinking.

  14. Here’s a hint: the antisemitic comment (by Babycakes, no longer anonymous) has been “deleted” (hidden).
Too bad that the owners of this site have so little regard for it and apparently no intention of repairing it.

  15. Hannah Beth Jackson is a person of very high character, who has done many great things in her career, which is why intelligent people have repeatedly voted her into office. The same cannot be said of anyone who uses such crude propaganda labels like “Taxin’ Jackson”. It’s not possible to overstate the amount of disdain that such a person deserves. If she were reading this, she would be right to ignore any suggestions coming from such a low life.

  16. Not Babycakes, and all other anonymous posters. If you are misidentified, you are to blame. Show some courage and be known. If you look at all the anon posts, you will notice that you all have the same ID so it is impossible to distinguish you. The random anon ID changes frequently throughout the day. Even if you are sent to the penalty box and your handle revealed, it still doesn’t matter due to the identical anon ID in the thread.

  17. Baby cakes, your “flagged as anti semitic” comment was so off the wall that it was it was difficult to find what it was connected to. Were you flagging your own comment about beak size as anti semitic? Was your original comment a joke, then were you flagging your joke as anti semitic?

  18. Jackson is very clear in her quote about her own bill: young people need support and training on how to navigate their digital world, particularly when it comes to cyberbullying, privacy, digital footprints, and fake news, What does she mean when she says young people need training how to navigate….fake news?

  19. That’s really nice, big brother wants to tell us what to read and not to read.
Also what would be extremely helpful to kids is to teach them about the illegality of forced vaccinations, fiat currency, and especially teach them how much money $acramento wastes on frivolous and unnecessary spending to consultants that have a “strong working relationship” with pols like Jackson. Now that is information that kids could use!

  20. > Baby cakes, your “flagged as anti semitic” comment
That wasn’t Babycakes’ comment, as one can easily see from the penalty box. You should give up on this, because you lack the basic cognitive skills to understand it.

  21. Trump started using the term “fake news” shortly after it was revealed that Russia had created numerous fake news feeds on facebook. He knew the jig was up and, so, as is he is prone to do, started using the term against real news to deflect from the revelation of all the Russian fake news feeds that contributed to his election.

  22. 8/25 at 9:22 pm, the time stamp is the only way to truly track an anonymous comment. But that’s also a lot of extra work especially if someone is in a hurry. I may start doing that, especially for threads to that get to rock-em sock-em robot levels. In looking at a whole bunch of anonymous comments, it’s impossible to know who is saying what because they all have the same number. When one of them get kicked to the penalty box, it’s easy to incorrectly attribute them to a different anonymous poster. It’s not the problem of the board, it’s the problem of those who post anonymously. No offense, but mistakes like that will be made.
