Legislation by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) to ensure students in California’s public schools learn how to assess media sources critically, and act ethically, responsibly, and safely online passed off the Senate Floor today on a 27 to 10 vote and now heads to the Governor’s desk.
Senate Bill 947 establishes a state-based advisory committee comprised of educators, administrators, researchers, and parents who will work with oversight by the Superintendent of Public Instruction to develop best practices, resources, and models for instruction of digital citizenship and media literacy.
Among other things, the advisory group will help develop strategies for school districts to implement instructional tools on digital citizenship and media literacy, including professional development and training for educators and administrators.
“While technology holds great promise for enhancing how children learn, young people need support and training on how to navigate their digital world, particularly when it comes to cyberbullying, privacy, digital footprints, and fake news,” said Senator Jackson. “SB 947 will ensure that digital citizenship, internet safety, and media literacy become part of the state’s basic educational goals and learning requirements.”
SB 947 is supported by Common Sense Kids Action. “With an educator community of more than 300,000 teachers, Common Sense supports kids and families as they navigate the digital age. We are in full support of Senator Jackson’s SB 947, which will ultimately empower students to make ethical choices when it comes to technology use. By identifying best practices for the teaching of digital citizenship in K-12 schools, SB 947 is an important first step in establishing a statewide curriculum for kids in today’s connected world,” said Elizabeth Galicia, Vice President of Common Sense Kids Action.
Jackson represents the 19th Senate District, which includes all of Santa Barbara County and western Ventura County.

Indeed. The bill provides for teaching children how to be safe on the internet, but these creeps oppose that because of their ideological opposition to HBJ, whom they actually know little about.

We’re talking about K-12. Even if Factotum’s extremely uncritical thought were correct, “reading widely” is not common among that population.
I find the headline of this info article misleading. ‘Fake news’ is not news. It is a lie. Plain and simple. Trump and his cronies came up with this title ‘fake news’ as part of their anti-legitimate newsmedia campaign. Legitimate news outlets write the ‘news’, based on facts. Fox is all opinion, an ‘interpretation’. Facts are true events and occurrences. Events that happen. Reality based. No analysis in a true news article. If you read the press release, HBJ seems to understand this and wants to make sure our students also understand the difference between truth/facts and spin.
Will the follow up legislation be how to identify those committing thought crimes?

I just watched “V is for Vendetta” so the thought of the government setting up a criteria for school kids to determine which news is reliable or not is way too big brother for me. If news sources or reported items are deemed to be a threat to their power then there is incentive for this government committee to make their logic tree to define it as fake. Once something can be defined as fake, then the next step is call for censorship. Maybe they should encourage a critical reading of 1984 instead.

I had to follow up on your comment because in no way was the movie antisemitic. The movie is about overturning totalitarian power. The movie used an image from the Holocaust, and that caused some board to flag it as “anti semitic”. That board considers the use of any image from the Holocaust as trivializing it, therefore they flagged it that way. It’s all about a totalitarian leader controlling the government, controlling the news, controlling entertainment, and controlling schools where no dissenting thought or action is allowed. It’s gritty and not for the faint of heart.

Hannah Beth Jackson is a person of very high character, who has done many great things in her career, which is why intelligent people have repeatedly voted her into office. The same cannot be said of anyone who uses such crude propaganda labels like “Taxin’ Jackson”. It’s not possible to overstate the amount of disdain that such a person deserves. If she were reading this, she would be right to ignore any suggestions coming from such a low life.

This bill seems to a sly way of giving more power to unions who in turn vote for HBJ/liberal agenda . The holy grail is to provide a legal platform to indoctrinate our youth while they are in school.
Trump started using the term “fake news” shortly after it was revealed that Russia had created numerous fake news feeds on facebook. He knew the jig was up and, so, as is he is prone to do, started using the term against real news to deflect from the revelation of all the Russian fake news feeds that contributed to his election.

8/25 at 9:22 pm, the time stamp is the only way to truly track an anonymous comment. But that’s also a lot of extra work especially if someone is in a hurry. I may start doing that, especially for threads to that get to rock-em sock-em robot levels. In looking at a whole bunch of anonymous comments, it’s impossible to know who is saying what because they all have the same number. When one of them get kicked to the penalty box, it’s easy to incorrectly attribute them to a different anonymous poster. It’s not the problem of the board, it’s the problem of those who post anonymously. No offense, but mistakes like that will be made.
