Santa Barbara Charter School has announced the passing of beloved teacher, Bev Abrams.

Abrams passed away on Friday, May 2, following a long battle with multiple health challenges. She was a founding teacher of Santa Barbara Charter School that began in 1993.

She worked as classroom teacher, Director of Education, and Reading Specialist teacher until her retirement in 2020. In retirement, she returned to the charter school as a part-time social skills coach and mentor.

“Bev was a woman of extraordinary wisdom, compassion, and unwavering dedication to students, families, and fellow educators. She led with grace and moral conviction, always putting children first and inspiring everyone around her to do the same. Bev was not only a gifted teacher and leader, but also a deeply kind and thoughtful human being who made others feel seen, heard, and deeply valued,” the school posted on social media.

Abrams was praised for her calm insight, intellectual strength, and steady encouragement. The school’s social media page was flooded with comments of love from her colleagues and former students.

“Bev was the child whisperer, she really knew kids. I will forever be grateful for how she shaped my children and the way she helped us parents understand our kids better,” one parent posted.

Santa Barbara Charter School stated though they mourn her loss, her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched, the lessons she shared, and the love she gave so freely.

A memorial service was held last week at Congregation B’nai B’rith followed by a graveside service at Goleta Cemetery.

Donations can be made to CBB’s Immigrant Defense Project or the Immigrant Family Defense Fund.
