A bear was struck and killed by a passing vehicle on Highway 101 southbound, just north of Padaro Lane in Summerland on Wednesday.
The California Highway Patrol’s Traffic Incident Page shows a dead animal in the center divider was reported at 7:17 a.m.
CHP stated it’s likely a result of a reported vehicle colliding with a “deer” on Tuesday evening in the same area. CHP has notified the California Department of Fish and Wildlife that has confirmed it will retrieve the bear today.
It’s unclear if this is the same black bear that was seen in Goleta and roaming through UC Santa Barbara last week. The last known photo of the bear was captured late last week showing it walking along the beach in More Mesa.

Poor poor Bear and Deer. Santa Barbara County really needs to install wildlife overpasses. There are loads of animals slaughtered on our stretch of 101 that no one ever hears about, including people’s pets. We should be helping these animals stay safe.
Absolutely. I’m so excited about the one down near Calabasas, but what about around here? That’s how I’d like my taxes spent.
So sad and honestly frustrating that local wildlife groups were unable to locate this bear and safely re-locate it to the wild. It was at UCSB for a quite a while. Where was animal control?
The last report about that Calabasas over crossing is that it coast $92 million! That’s a lot…
It would be state fish & wildlife. How would you get the bear trap off the beach?
ANON – I was thinking while it was roaming around the dorms on campus over the weekend. Don’t they usually tranq them and then haul them in a cage? Either way, it’s a shame it had been in an urban area for so long and then died a painful death all before anyone could have intervened.
I mean, the last reported sighting was More Mesa, below the cliffs. I suppose a trap could have been trailered onto the beach from Hendry’s…
So sad! I was thinking about the bear yesterday — no sightings since Friday on the beach?! It would have to get back to land or accessible beach and be located in order to be trapped. What a frigging bummer.
TMFP
sad & preventable! Perhaps, DFG waited too long before making a decision to try & trap it. Last July, a big collared bear was roaming the Mountain View & Rancho Del Ciervo neighborhoods. I called DFG and they said the bear would likely go back into the LPNF. That is a very passive approach when a bear is the neighborhood and in backyards. in broad daylight. Someone or something (bear) is not going to end up in a positive outcome
I wonder if it was the bear that visited me 3 1/2 years ago. He was about 6 feet from me near my door, and acted docile and not at all aggressive. He looked at me when I hollered at him to put my trash bin down, which he did and left. Sad to see these guys killed. If there was a way to post photos on Edhat I would do it as I took several while he was checking out my trash bin.
