Ayer’s Repairs at the corner of Chapala and Victoria Street closed after 40 years.
Their website is now redirecting to a tire shop that’s not in the area. Is this business going to take over the shop or did they simply buy their site?
I’m curious what edhat reader’s experience was with Ayer’s and if they’ll miss the downtown mechanic.
Good riddance! Absolute scam artists, brought shame to local mom and pop shops. They’d also go on tirades online responding to negative reviews. Spent a pretty penny on marketing and advertising though. Won’t miss their annoying commercials.
Wow, didn’t see that one coming. Went by the shop this morning and said Hmmm, where’s all the cars that were always on the lot? End of an era, hope someone moves in and makes a go of it at the corner.
Won’t be missed – well-known shady mechanic.
I believe there was a gas station at this site way back when, does anyone recall the name?
The space used to be Newman Freeman racing. Budweiser Racing Team housed their Can-Am cars in the garages. Paul Newman (the actor) and Bill Freeman owned the team. They occupied the space in the late 70’s early 80’s.
Good gods, the yelp reviews are staggeringly bad, for years. How did they go on?
(I’ll just put in a good word for Powell’s Garage and GM Auto & Smog.)
I agree. Scam artist.
Took a car there 30 years ago and they wanted to do all sorts of stuff that was “needed”. I am mechanically inclined and laughed at them as I drove away.
Agree – I can’t believe they lasted so long. I took my car there one time around 35 years ago, and they claimed to have done a bunch of work I didn’t ask for and they probably didn’t do. I had to threaten them with legal action before they would give me my car back.
I’ve heard versions of this story from about a hundred people over the past few decades. They would hold vehicles hostage until customers paid for services that were not done. And they got away with it! That’s what is so insane.
They bought a lot of meat at my market for their employees on a regular basis. Several times a year. Seemed like nice folks. Hope they are retiring happily.
Join in the sigh of relief. Had to sue them a few years back because they absolutely faked a smog system which was, of course, caught the next the the vehicle had to be certified. They just lied and lied. Finally gave in on the courthouse steps.
Agree they were scam artists. Ripped off my daughter for unnecessary extra repairs way over & above the issue she went to Ayers Repairs for. Bad people, good riddance!
I have to agree with others here. I had very bad experiences there, though it was many years ago. Won’t be missed.
