[On June 17] there were white-painted arrows and a few other marks appeared on the sidewalks of Mason, Alisos, Voluntario and maybe other streets. There have been no explanations and I wonder if anyone knows what they signify, what they're for?

I was expecting a few comments about the red couch (I think it’s a couch) on the front yard. But I’m glad not to find them. It reminds me of simpler times in my life.

You might try standing between the arrows For a while, chanting whatever you like, and see if: 1. You disappear 2. You bet picked up by an alien spacecraft. 3. You discover a new understanding of God 4. County Psych show up with a net.

Sidewalk removal and replacement

May be getting ready for a property owner's lateral sewer line replacement project, as mandated the city's SLIP program.

Was posted here that others might be along later to identify any possible utility laterals serving that property - that also might be present between those two arrows that indicated where the sewer lateral (perpendicular to the street) was located. Know before you dig.

No, sewer laterals run perpendicular ( or laterally, hence the name ) to the street and not longitudinally along under sidewalks. Also over 90% are being done trench less, so no sidewalk removal. By the way the City is working up a plan to tax every one including those of us who have already paid thousands for this work so the City will replace the rest of them for free.

Sidewalk to be replaced in areas between arrows. The estimators mark it, the city approves, and the construction crews do the work.

That's just about completely wrong unless you know for a fact this has all changed recently. City techs determine and mark the areas to be removed and work up the costs for the contract which is put out to bid. Contractors' estimators measure it and work up a bid and if no problems it's then awarded to the lowest bidder. The only exception would be a small or emergency project.

Possibly showing the limits of proposed excavations pursuant to “Call before you dig” laws (Undergound Service Alert). The areas between the arrows can then be marked showing any underground utilities.

White lines/arrows commonly used to delineate limits of proposed underground construction, and usually placed simultaneously with notice to Underground Service Alert (USA) and request for other utilities to mark location of UG facilities. If other utilities are present, they'll be marked as follows: Red - Electrical power cables or duct banks Orange - Communication cables or duct banks Yellow - Petroleum and natural gas pipelines Blue - Water Lines Purple - Recycled water lines Green - Sewer Lines Pink - Survey markings

Broken sidewalk repair or root trimming?

S/W looks fine, likely root pruning.
