Santa Maria Police Department (SMPD) officers successfully apprehended a man threatening employees and customers with a knife at a Jack in the Box restaurant on Friday morning, July 18, 2025. The suspect, a 47-year-old Santa Maria resident, was arrested without injury after tense negotiations.
At approximately 9:58 a.m., SMPD officers responded to Jack in the Box, located at 2306 S. Broadway, following reports that the armed man was threatening those inside the restaurant. Upon arrival, officers swiftly evacuated all employees and customers to ensure their safety before engaging the suspect, who refused to cooperate and began making threats toward law enforcement.
The SMPD negotiators worked diligently to deescalate the situation. After roughly 30 minutes of tense discussions, officers managed to peacefully take the man into custody without further incident. The suspect now faces charges including criminal threats, resisting arrest, and trespassing.
Authorities praised the swift and coordinated response of the officers and negotiators, whose efforts ensured the safety of everyone involved. No injuries were reported during the incident.
The SMPD has not released the name of the suspect. There is no further threat to the public.
