At approximately 8:10 p.m. last night, January 1, 2019, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a male subject armed with a handgun in the 900 block of Embarcadero Del Mar. The suspect had reportedly been asked to leave a restaurant bar because of his level of intoxication. He then brandished a firearm and reportedly threatened to shoot people. The suspect fled southbound into Anisq’Oyo Park. UCSB Police Officers and Sheriff’s Deputies from the Isla Vista Foot Patrol responded. They apprehended 24-year-old Anthony Rios of Isla Vista after a short foot pursuit.

Deputies searched the area and located a black backpack in a trashcan that contained a magazine with two rounds of ammunition. A handgun was also located near a dumpster. Rios was arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of possession of a pistol with an altered or destroyed serial number, criminal threats, brandishing a firearm in a threatening man ner and carrying a loaded firearm in public.

Rios was released today after posting $50,000 bail. Rios does not have any firearms registered to him and its unknown at this time how he came into possession of the firearm he brandished during this incident.

I totally agree with you. It should be up to the admins to determine that a heavily downvoted comment is actually in violation of Edhat's rules of conduct. If you can get your entire frat house to jump on a comment you find politically incorrect then it's the bullies and mobs that win.

On the subject of down-votes. I gather it was supposed to prevent flaming and profanity, but has lost that focus. My guess is that the person or people who do it don't believe in freedom of speech and are intolerant of anyone who's views don't accord with their own or view this as a place they have <some> power in an otherwise thwarted existence or just get a kick out of being annoying if they are juveniles (or cases of arrested development.) Several solutions: Rescind the option and leave it entirely up to the administrator, Put the entire message in the "view it anyway" file so would-be sensors can't control it if someone wants to read it or find a way to identify the person or people behind wrongful use and block them from the site unless they stop abusing it.

"... Put the entire message in the "view it anyway" file so would-be sensors can't control it if someone wants to read it..." This is how it used to be. I'd be satisfied going back to that so that valid posts with information and/or opinions could still be part of the conversation. I've emailed Edhat about this.

Edhat doesn't want to spend their time nannying the posts, and don't/can't pay someone to be on it 24 hrs. So were hoping the responsible people of the world would do it. But any honor system can be gamed by people who don't have the same values as the majority. The only answer to me is to make the posters or at least the voters pay and use their real names linked to their credit card. When people lose their anonymity then things suddenly start to get a lot nicer.

Rex - lots of non offensive comments have been rapidly voted to deletion over the past hour. Check out the one about the gang violence tonight. Simple statements by Roger about what was happening. Gone. Obviously someone with multiple accounts logging on to be a pest. Bummer.
