Dec 01, 2019 01:30 PMNot much happens to juvenile offenders in CA- They will get a trip over the Hill to the Los Prietos "Boys Camp", a soft touch camp for junior-bangers... a couple weeks at best.

Dec 01, 2019 01:39 PMOnly way to get "jumped" into a local gang - commit increasing degrees of crime - grafitti, vandalism, shoplifting, on up the food chain to murder. This town needs to be 100% gang-free. Why should we be put at risk when their initiation requires crimes against all us? Gangs in this town make UCSB frats look like errant choir boys. Gangs are deliberate; frats are stupid.

Dec 01, 2019 09:25 PM@FACTOTUM- Gangs will exist for a lot of reasons- They are embraced culturally and they provide a service of providing street drugs from the vagrants to the grade school, Jr High School, High School and College kids... Until drugs are eliminated, gangs will flourish and prosper. Don't tell me the Cops don't know who and how the gangs get drugs... it's an on going game that both benefit from.

Dec 02, 2019 09:09 AMGang injunction and multimodal front using social pressure the same way we controlled and limited smoking. There is no one magic bullet. But perpetuating myths that gangs are benign social clubs is the number one hoax to eliminate; same ad 9 out of 10 doctors claim cigarette brand XYZ is their own choice. Social pressure against gangs is as effective as legal enforcment. But first admit gangs are a serious problem in this town. And toss out judges who ultimately claim they are not - that is why we still elect local judges.

Dec 02, 2019 11:49 AMLUVADUCK - why are you so bent on humiliating the parents? Some of these kids are beyond good parenting. It's probably incredibly difficult parenting kids in this type of environment, it's not as easy as you might think.

Dec 02, 2019 12:08 PMYeah force the parents to do hard labor because their kids are screw ups. WOW folks. How about.....we actually punish the kid?? Too easy? Better yet, create an enhancement for 18+ year olds who are caught committing gang crimes with minors! Punish the adults who are turning the kids into gangsters.

Dec 02, 2019 04:12 PMUntil a minor becomes of age, the minor's name can't be disclosed. Other legal distinctions in favor of not punishing a minor as an adult make sense only if the burden is on the custodial person(s). Accessment of the minor's share should be appropriate to their age & understanding since it is the parent's job to instill understanding & good judgment through all the years until adulthood. Some kids are more difficult, but a "bad seed" has a medical mental condition to be dealt with as early as possible. "As the twig is bent, so grows the tree". Everyone screws up to some extent sometimes; repetitious serial misbehavior is another ball game.

Dec 02, 2019 03:41 PMTo those who find punishing the parents as well as the underage child: I might agree with you if I hadn't grown up as I did. We were poor and I had jobs at home until I was old enough for jobs outside it (8), and my parents were on top of me making sure I never got started down the deliquency path. My hand was held in stores and I was told to be quiet; I was told to pick up anything I dropped, to open doors for adults, step aside for people carrying things--on and on. Dad worked 2 jobs, Mom had only a part-time one--other than cook, clean, make our clothes, can, mend--and still found time. Neither of them had hobbies or free time and neither did we. I agree that parenting is difficult. Birth control has been around since the 60's. For those who won't make the effort, find the time and don't have a driving interest in teaching & civilizing their kids, there is an easy alternative and no shame in passing on a 24/7 x 18 - 21 year, expensive job. It isn't for those not up to it and it is a choice.
