Are You Prepared for the Next Fire?

Are you prepared for the next fire and evacuation in S.B. County?  On cool days like we've been having, it's easier to calmly do the work necessary...except who wants to think about fire!  Northern California is experiencing multiple fires, and Gov. Brown declared a State of Emergency today for Lake County.

"Officials say to please remember your pets, personal belongings, computers, prescriptions, photos, paperwork, and phones if time allows. Please try to close all windows and doors as well when you evacuate."

My go-to for information is always Edhat first, then KEYT.  But, here  are a couple off-the-beaten-track  suggestions, California meteorological & climatological updates hand filtered for the 805. California wildfires, 805 Weather  https://twitter.com/805Weather,  and Ham Radio AI6YR (Ben in Newbury Park). This Ham Radio account is mostly active during major weather disasters.  https://twitter.com/ai6yrham?lang=en.  You don't have to belong to twitter to follow these.

What recommendations do Edhatters have for preparation?

DEEAHNA, sorry for your loss. Sad. Is there a way to protect cars packed with all important stuff? I've heard of people going to shelters and their cars/trucks broken into. If you evacuate to a hotel, do you have to keep watch over your car, too?

Well, maybe no one wants to think of fire today (it's good idea though) but earthquakes can hit any time; it's not a case of if, but when. Being prepared with the recommendations here will work for any emergency.

Edhat staff do a wonderful summary each day of the latest disaster information. LOTS of important information. During the Thomas Fire and Debris Flow, Edhat staff were there for us, right along with our Roger!

I was ready last time. However I wasn’t prepared to have my possessions stolen during the mandatory evacuation in Summerland. I had a small utility trailer in my driveway which I use often. It contained materials for two projects that I needed to do but couldn’t afford to do in the first place. After I evacuated, someone hitched the trailer and took everything with it. Of course I have car insurance but I never thought about adding the trailer since it never occurred to me that someone would take it in Summerland especially since my neighbors and I watch out for each other. It was very discouraging and costly for me. And the insurance agent that I have had for decades was no help at all even though I have never had a previous claim. Next time I won’t even leave garden tools outside in the yard.

Thanks for voting me down and out, guys-----but AGAIN: I can never seem to access Edhat when there's any kind of fire, earthquake, flood, wind event (or microburst, ha) event. It's an exercise in frustration and Noozhawk always seems to have the more pertinent details right at the moment. Roger does a great job, but what good is all his great effort and reporting efforts of readers if the Edhat site is down?

Edhat users seem to use the voting buttons to punish unpopular opinions which his how echo chambers get created and we end up in our current political climate. Voting down a comment should only occur when it violates the commenting guidelines, not when it is unpopular. I will reiterate what was said as well, edhat is not a reliable source of information in a disaster as it once was...even the new design is usually offline when we need it most. In the vacuum, KEYT has really stepped up their coverage along with other online sources like Indy and Noozhawk.

I don't think we are out of the "woods" at all with respect to fire danger. Mission Canyon, the Riviera, and the Cathedral Oaks foothill areas all seem vulnerable to my mind. After seeing how fierce and erratic fire behavior has become, even those of us down in urban residential areas are in danger. In the event a fire breaks out and I am away from home, I packed an emergency change of clothes, some toiletries and a couple days worth of Rx and photocopies of some of my important paperwork (including the homeowners' insurance policy) which I keep in my car. A thumbdrive of photos and a photo accounting of the valuables in the house would probably be a good thing to keep with this bundle as well. Let's hope for the best this summer and fall.

Roger is always first with disaster information. The Edhat site is more reliable now. Still much better than Noozhawk for breaking information on wildfires.

The bigger risk at this point is more floods for Montecito this winter and of course Earth Quakes for all of us. Lots of water, propane, canned food and camping gear. You need to be completely self sufficient for a week since most utilities will be broken and the stores will be out of food and gasoline very quickly.

Here’s a newspaper article today, Sacramento Bee. Helpful phone numbers for people with stress from wildfires: https://www.sacbee.com/news/state/california/fires/article213860854.html . For anyone needing to evacuate in S.B., here’s a list of hotels in S.B., Goleta, and Santa Ynez Valley. https://santabarbaraca.com/content/uploads/2018/03/Storm-Evacuee-Hotel-Rate-List_Updated-2.28.18.pdf

Appreciate your concern, but I need a break. It's been a tough year -- with family and local disasters, and what's happening nationally, as well. I don't want to think about fire today.
