Are Pole Signs Now Allowed?
By an edhat reader
Are pole signs now allowed within the City of Santa Barbara? The newly remodeled Fuel Depot, former Mobil station, on Las Positas next to Highway 101 has a new pole sign. I never read that this ban was removed.

Jun 29, 2020 09:13 AMI was surprised, but I think that is county property, not city. See Here:

Jun 29, 2020 09:29 AMI recall a pole sign being at that location for the longest time, perhaps there wasn't anything in it being advertised or it was saying "Mobil" from the previous station. There is a sign there dating back to March of 2012 based on Google Street View. And yes, this parcel is in the County, not the City.

Jun 29, 2020 11:00 AMOK....someone thought pole signs are banned in the city of SB.....yes they are banned there. Problem is poster complains when there never was an issue because the signs in question are in the County. Typical lets start complaining rather than Oh, why bother that there is no problem.

Jun 29, 2020 11:09 AMWhy are pole signs banned? How else would you post a sign? Are there really complaints about the structure used to hold a sign? I just don't get it.

Jul 03, 2020 05:10 PM@SACJON Why do you live in SB? Appreciate the fact that there are no billboards and minimal pole signs, not to mention high rise hotels and apartments. There are examples of alternatives all over. If history is your thing suggest you google Pearl Chase

Jun 29, 2020 10:58 AMThat's correct that this is the same Mobil pole sign with updated logo. Difference is the Mobil sign had little if any yellow or red, mostly blue, so it hardly stood out.

Jun 29, 2020 11:44 AMThat little shopping center near Modoc and Las Positas is outside city limits so county rules apply.

Jun 29, 2020 02:28 PMDefinitely in the County and they don't have any rule outlawing pole signs. Same goes for the pole sign across the freeway at Earl Warren. This particular pole sign has been there in one form or another since the 70's. Let it go Karen

Jun 29, 2020 10:29 PM@NOPE Yes it is the county and depending on the community plan area, if one exists, they certainly have ordinances against pole signs. This is why you don’t see many, they are either grandfathered in or in an area of the county without design review standards. Most large signs require BAR review and a conditional use permit.

Jun 30, 2020 09:42 AMI agree with this but you should know that the Earl Warren Showgrounds is independent of the County or City and sets its own rules about almost everything, including RV camping, 'fairs' and loud music events.

Jun 29, 2020 05:13 PMWe're in the middle of a pandemic, civil unrest, and geopolitical turmoil, yet you wanna complain about a sign? I knew SB was a bubble, but Jesus dude....

Jun 30, 2020 07:22 AMDear XO1660 - That's what they want you to think. "Just watch what's going on in my left hand so you don't see me gutting local, state and federal laws and policies with the other hand."

Jun 30, 2020 09:52 AM7:22am - Hahahah! So, the pandemic and civil unrest is just a giant ruse so that people can start erecting signs on poles? Yes, yes you've figured it out! Ohhhhh man!

Jun 30, 2020 10:48 AMEMMENANTHE - Can you explain how it is an "ugly eyesore?" It seriously looks like a gas station sign to me. I haven't analyzed all local gas signs, but this looks nothing out of the ordinary. What am I missing?

Jun 30, 2020 01:47 PM1:12 - Ah.... I have no "esthetic (sic)" sense, eh? Well, it'really not that ugly. It's a pole with a sign. Signs usually have poles or other means of carrying them. We have them all over. Stop signs, street signs, etc etc.... not a big deal. It's just a sign, folks.

Jun 30, 2020 06:29 PMYes, it is just a sign. But industrial design, commercial art, a sense of beauty can easily be accommodated in advertising. This one is ugly. Other signs are better and last. Can't compare this silly thing to the Coca-Cola logo for example.

Jun 30, 2020 06:46 PMRHS - your pettiness aside, what do you want? You don't like the sign, ok so what? What do you want us to do? Shall we petition the City to have it removed? Boycott the gas station? If it's so upsetting to you, go offer to pay for a new sign.

Jun 30, 2020 11:50 AMHere's a screen shot of the same corner from 2012. (https://tinyurl.com/y86tocf2) I don't recall anyone complaining about Mobil's similar sign.

Jun 30, 2020 04:22 PMThe biggest difference between the 2020 and 2012 photos are the price of gas! In 2020, it is $2.79/gal, while in 2012 it was $4.59/gal. Wow!
