Is the city looking into the health and safety of the many Italian stone pines like the one that fell on De La Vina the other day? Just 7-8 years ago that same tree (or the one next to it) dropped a giant limb that pancaked one and a half cars on that corner. Last August on the same block across the street this happened (attachment). This was at 4 in the afternoon on a calm day. I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more. They are a beautiful tree but it seems that some preventative maintenance is in order.
He is very responsive when I have called with concerns in the past. He will answer your questions.
I’d rather have a vibrant tree-lined street with an occasional squashed car than a denuded shadeless streetscape. The drought is taking its toll.

Yes. There is a Street Tree Management sector of the Parks & Rec department of the City. The City of SB has over 33,000 trees, it is reasonable that a few fall every year. I’m sure Tim Downey would welcome your comments: Tim Downey

I admit, I thought this way at first too, it’s a bit blame-y. But then I realized, isn’t it better for someone to have genuine concern, than to not care at all?
With respect, genuine care would be to offer suggestions of support and assistance instead of pointing the finger at others. Maybe, if concerned, call the city and find out more before posting this sort of stuff.
Trees loose branches, eventually fall over or die. That’s part of the life process, do you expect everything to live forever? I’m sorry. Shall we march!
What’s next – counseling for the surviving trees?
How about tree shaming labels? “Beware: This tree has shallow roots.” (Sarcasm)
The idea that tree maintenance is at fault for the failure of mature trees planted in places that they aren’t well suited for is silly. Do people have any perspective on their world or is it only what they saw last coupled with an inherent need to criticize and blame?
It’s 2019 where you blame someone else, protest everything and call out everyone on their every move all without realizing how much of hypocrite you actually are. We’re all guilty!
