Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District announced that the application period for 2019 Clean Air Grant funding is now open. Approximately $2.5 million is available for this year’s grants.
The District will award projects on a first-come, first-served basis until all funds have been committed. The District will prioritize projects operating in a Low-Income Community (as defined by AB 1550) and projects proposing zero-emission technology. The District may also use discretion to distribute funds equitably throughout the county. Individuals, businesses, and nonprofits looking to replace old diesel-powered equipment with newer, cleaner models are encouraged to apply. Each award will not exceed $150,000, or 80 percent of the project cost, whichever is less. Examples of eligible projects include:
On-Road Heavy Duty Vehicles:
o Heavy-duty trucks and buses
o School buses
o Solid waste collection vehicles
o Transit fleet vehicles, including urban buses
o Public agency and utility vehicles
o Emergency vehicles
Off-Road Equipment:
o Tractors
o Forklifts
o Loaders and dozers
o Excavators
o Agricultural utility vehicles
Marine Vessels (regulated and non-regulated commercial vessels)
Agricultural Engines
Alternative Fueling Infrastructure
Over the past 32 years, the District has collaborated with local operators and awarded nearly $37 million to various engine replacement projects throughout Santa Barbara County. These projects have eliminated several thousand tons of smog-forming pollution and particulate matter, both of which harm human health.
“Great strides have been made in local air pollution control programs, and voluntary emission reductions from mobile sources is critical to help us reach our clean air goals,” said Aeron Arlin Genet, District Director. “The Clean Air Grants allow the District to partner with local businesses and individuals to replace dirty on-road, off-road, marine, and agricultural engines and equipment with newer, cleaner technologies for a fraction of the cost.”
