What the heck is going on with the helicopter flying over ranches in Los Carneros in the last hour?  It's flying SO low we thought it would crash on site. Five horses were freaking out making it dangerous for us to work! It’s now doing the same at Hope Ranch. What’s up?

Another Low Flying Helicopter?

There are currently no Helicopter tour companies at Santa Barbara Airport. Usually these flights are hanging new telephone poles and transformers. Sometimes they are installing AC units on top of buildings or on other hard to reach places.

we have 2 "sightseeing" helicopters in the area. white and black. well one crashed I think last year. but most of the time those little ones with the high rotor, are the sightseeing helicopters.

Because of the aerodynamic capabilities of a helicopter, and the work they were designed to accomplish, there are no restrictions on altitude operations for a helicopter. The only restriction is that they must be operated in a safe manner. If they are hovering or flying low over the ground it's not considered unsafe. If they are hovering feet above your house for no reason then it might be considered unsafe. Check with FAA Flight Standards office located in Van Nuys. That's the closest FAA enforcement agency, local FAA doesn't handle that.

It was NOT the tour company.... I said they were flying a pattern for either aerial surveying, photography or inspection. As a retired Engr. Tech. / Surveyor I can tell you it's more economical now to use a helo than the fixed wing P-38s that Mark Hurd used out of Goleta back in the late 60s and early 70s for aerial surveys. If you see freshly painted white crosses on the roadway that's the tell.

Midair, you don't get it. Whether or not this incident was 'lawful' it was discourteous and threatening to the people on the ground. This is another example of the selfishness of those who buzz around our communities in both small planes and helicopters. I don't know if this was such an event or not for sure but there is/was a company offering helicopter tours. Maybe this is that business?

Back side of the Riviera, Las Canoas area, another or maybe the same one, very low, very loud, making really sharp turns and did seem to be taking aerial photos, around noon. How low are private helicopters allowed to fly? This seemed no more than 200-300 feet.

It was the same one, heard it first from San Roque, out over Noleta, then watched it with the same pattern down over and past the Riviera.

Couldn't get the numbers but it was private and not setting poles. Pattern back and forth looked like aerial survey, photography or checking power or gas lines.
