On September 28, 2018, for the third day this week, Sheriff’s detectives assigned to the Special Investigations Bureau and Special Enforcement Team served search warrants in the local area on suspected illegal marijuana cultivation sites. Assisting the Sheriff’s Office on these operations were wardens with the California Department of Fish & Wildlife and the California Highway Patrol. As with the previous sites earlier in the week, these cultivation sites did not possess any licenses from the State of California or the County of Santa Barbara to operate legally.
The first search warrant was served in the 6700 block of Foxen Canyon Road. After securing the property, detectives located 658 mature marijuana plants, which were subsequently destroyed. At the location, detectives contacted individuals, and interviewed them for further follow up concerning the investigation. Additionally, the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, gathered e vidence concerning potential environmental violations.
After detectives finished the first search warrant, an additional search warrant was served in the 2400 block of Hwy 246. Once this property was secured, detectives saw a very large marijuana cultivation site in various stages of cultivation and processing of finished product. At this location, detectives located and destroyed 7,985 marijuana plants. Again, at this location no arrests were made, but individuals at this location were interviewed for potential future charges against the individuals responsible.
With the service of the second search warrant, detectives destroyed a total of 8,643 marijuana plants worth an estimated value of $4.3 million dollars. This brings a total for the three days of marijuana enforcement to 14,116 marijuana plants destroyed with an estimated value of $7 million dollars.
The Sheriff’s Cannabis Compliance Team will continue to identify and investigate illegal marijuana cultivation sites within the county. The goal of the team is to stop the illegal cultivation of marijuana and prevent the environmental crimes associated with these illegal grows.

Too bad you can’t search the reservation
I agree. Wasteful. My first thought upon seeing the headline and estimated value was: —-“Why can’t they let someone have this pot who really needs it? Medical marijuana use?”
A huge shame to see such a gigantic waste of medicine. There are much better ways to approach this enforcement, but of course law enforcement default to the “let’s destroy a ton of stuff and pay every officer overtime while we are at it.”
