Animal, vegetable or mineral?

By an edhat reader

A few months ago, this thing showed up in our yard, and we have no idea what it is.  We are guessing it was dropped by a crow, but not sure.  It is about 1.5” in diameter when closed, and 3” when open.  When dry, it curls closed.  When it gets wet (from rain or heavy dew), it unfurls and opens.  It seems kind of leathery, but we can’t tell if it is actually leather or part of a plant.  Maybe it came from the ocean? Anyone know what this is?  Or better yet, any one missing one of these?  Thanks!
