Andrée Clark Bird Refuge Restoration Begins

Source: City of Santa Barbara
Construction of the Andrée Clark Bird Refuge Restoration Project will begin on Monday, August 1 and is anticipated to be complete in December. Project elements include replacing the weir gate with an improved design, construction of an upstream treatment wetland at the Municipal Tennis Courts on Old Coast Highway, restoration of habitat around the lake with the installation of native plants and trees, and restoration of dune and salt marsh habitats at the mouth of the Bird Refuge on East Beach.
Initial construction areas will include East Beach between the Clark Estate and the East Beach Volleyball Courts (the courts will remain open throughout the project), and the weir gate. Work near the Municipal Tennis Courts will begin in September, and landscaping around the Bird Refuge will take place in October/November.

Aug 03, 2022 10:08 AMYes, I still remember the awful smell of the stench of the Bird Refuge when I use to ride my bicycle by there when I was a kid back in the 60's during the summer months.

Aug 02, 2022 11:25 PMThe new habitat areas will attract birds and other species and help the whole local ecosystem. It will also be a good illustration of what SoCal would be like in its natural state. Goleta saw especially drastic change, the whole airport footprint used to be a bay used by sailing ships. Before that, it was a large Chumash settlement . People have found several cannons there, I believe when they were digging for a natural gas pipeline.

Aug 02, 2022 10:37 PMWhat are they going to do with the poop?
I'm thinking packaging it as "Santa Barbara Gourmet Compost" and sell it on Etsy.
