Alleged Burglar Arrested for Rape and Kidnapping

A 24-year-old man was arrested after allegedly kidnapping a raping a woman, then burglarizing two different local businesses.
Kahlil Byers was recently arrested for burglary, rape, and kidnapping with a bail set at $1,000,000.
Byers is accused of harassing a woman trying to sleep in an alcove in the downtown Santa Barbara area on April 18, 2018. The victim tried to escape with her belongings when Byers chased her down and forcibly dragged her down a driveway before assaulting her in the first block of E. Carrillo Street around 5:00 a.m.
According to KEYT News, a passerby eventually pulled his car into an adjacent parking lot and illuminated the crime scene which allowed the victim to escape when Byers ran away. Investigating the scene, police discovered items from a Foot Locker and pawn shop burglaries that took place hours earlier.
Santa Barbara Police responded to the Foot Locker store in the Paseo Nuevo Mall after 2:00 a.m. where the front window was shattered with merchandise missing. Then, an alarm went off at Santa Barbara Jewelry pawn shop on 136 E. Victoria Street where a window was broken with items stolen. Police suspect Byers to be responsible for both burglaries and thefts, report KEYT News.
