Above the Castillo Underpass Repair

By Art Sylvester
Here is a bird's eye view of the Castillo Underpass repair site. Of course most of the work is happening beneath the US 101 overpass, but you can see that all the pavers have been removed since work started on Monday, and now preparations are beginning for the next phase. In the meantime Castillo Street completely closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic between Haley and Montecito Streets until August 18 when construction is expected to be completed.

Jun 22, 2017 01:28 PMI understand that this underpass is below the water table and as such constitutes a shallow water well. However, the city has never been able to fix the problem though they have re-paved numerous times, tried exotic, expensive, electronic drying technology used on missile silos, and a number of other failed methods. Perhaps a combination of a more extensive french drain system and drilling and pumping a number of new wells there would lower the local water table. I suspect the water is contaminated with ocean salt, chemicals, and old hydrocarbons, and as such is not an asset or water source.

Jun 22, 2017 03:09 PMNice aerial, Art.
I'd love to see a drone video posted here that takes the viewer inside & through the underpass area. That seems easy for a person with drone flying skills. Thanks in advance!

Jun 23, 2017 07:30 AMThe underpass is not below the water table. The Mesa fault runs directly beneath the southbound on/off ramps. It is a thrust fault and natural springs often flow through thrust faults.
