Esteemed actor, director, and playwright Colman Domingo was bestowed with the prestigious Montecito Award at the 40th Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) on February 14, Valentine’s Day. The award was presented in a special ceremony moderated by SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling and presented by none other than Miss Oprah Winfrey, a Montecito resident.

Domingo, whose recent role in Greg Kwedar’s “Sing Sing” catapulted him into the forefront of cinematic discussion, was recognized not only for his portrayal in this latest film, but for a stellar career that has seen him deliver outstanding performances across film, television, and theatre. At the event, Domingo reflected on his journey and the eclectic mix of roles he has inhabited.

In a poignant session, the actor shared insights from his career, highlighting the profound impact of films like “Selma,” where he experienced first-hand the narratives of Civil Rights leaders. His roles in productions such as HBO’s “Euphoria,” where he played Ali, and in “If Beale Street Could Talk,” were discussed as examples where Domingo brought complexity and depth to his characters.

Domingo’s captivating performance in “Sing Sing,” where he plays Divine G, is described by Roger Durling as “unforgettable.” Durling commended Domingo’s dedication: “Colman is a committed performer and one of the most extraordinary talents, making every role seem effortless. His work in SING SING is just the latest testament to his incredible capabilities.”

The actor also touched on the challenging aspects of his roles, from portraying the manipulative figure of X in “Zola” to the nuanced depiction of Bayard Rustin in “Rustin.” Domingo expressed his alignment with Rustin, feeling a synchronicity in their paths that made him the ideal interpreter of the Civil Rights activist.

Celebrating a career adorned with numerous nominations and awards—including an Emmy and a recent nomination for an Academy Award—Domingo’s resume is as diverse as it is impressive. He has been recognized with nominations from the Oscars, BAFTA, Tony Awards, and more, securing wins at the Emmy, NAACP Image, and Black Reel Awards among others.

Looking ahead, Domingo’s schedule remains packed with promising projects. He stars in the Netflix limited series “The Madness,” and will be seen in upcoming films including ‘Michael’, where he portrays Joe Jackson. Additionally, Domingo is set to voice a character in the Disney+ animated series “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” and is working on Netflix’s “The Four Seasons” with Tina Fey and Steve Carrell.

To present the award, Oprah took the stage and gave a moving tribute to Domingo prompting tears and cheers from the audience.

“You brings stories to light that allow us to feel and experience humanity in all the characters that you play. You do that because of your deep humanity,” said Oprah. “I know that your mother and all the ancestors are so proud of you, and they are proud of you because they get to see the fulfillment of their wildest dreams in you.”
