The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) hosted an illuminating Writers Panel, drawing in a crowd eager to dive into the creative processes of some of the year’s most acclaimed screenwriters.

Moderated by the respected film industry journalist Anne Thompson, the panel featured a diverse group of talents whose works span across genres and narratives, highlighting the vibrant landscape of contemporary cinema.

The distinguished panelists included Clint Bentley (“Sing Sing”), Jesse Eisenberg (“A Real Pain”), Joslyn Barnes (“Nickel Boys”), Mona Fastvold (“The Brutalist”), Peter Straughan (“Conclave”), and Tim Fehlbaum (“September 5”), each bringing their unique perspective on storytelling.

Thompson’s winning formula is to ask each panelist the following: 1) resume/how did you become a screenwriter 2) specific, thoughtful questions about each film, with follow ups 3) hardest scene to write 4) writing process and 5) next project.

Clint Bentley, discussing his approach to “Sing Sing,” revealed a fundamental truth about his creative process, emphasizing the power of relinquishing control to capture the essence of the story authentically. “By letting go of any control as a writer, we could get closer to the truth of what we tried to get across,” Bentley shared, highlighting the importance of organic storytelling.

Jesse Eisenberg, known for his multifaceted career a fast-talking wit, underscored the significance of authenticity in his writing for “A Real Pain.” He expressed, “My loyalty was always towards how can I convey authenticity through a story,” offering a glimpse into his commitment to genuine storytelling.

The adaptation process was a central theme for Joslyn Barnes with “Nickel Boys,” as she detailed the innovative narrative techniques utilized to bring the story to life on screen. The concept of a “sentient camera” was integral to presenting the film’s complex themes, allowing audiences to navigate through the protagonist’s memories in a visceral and engaging manner.

Mona Fastvold, reflecting on her experience with “The Brutalist,” remarked on the serendipity of assembling her film’s creative team. “It feels special and beautiful that we ended up with this group of people,” Fastvold said, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that underpins successful filmmaking.

Peter Straughan delved into the philosophical undercurrents of “Conclave,” noting, “Certainty is the enemy of unity,” a message that resonates deeply in today’s polarized socio-political climate. Straughan’s insights spotlighted the broader implications of his work beyond the confines of the screen.

Lastly, Tim Fehlbaum shared his fascination with narrative confines in “September 5,” embracing the challenge of crafting a compelling story set in a singular location. “I immediately liked the challenge,” he confessed, showcasing the innovative spirit that defines the festival’s selected writers.

The 2025 SBIFF Writers Panel offered attendees a rare opportunity to peer into the minds of contemporaries shaping the future of film through their powerful narratives and bold storytelling choices. As the festival continues to celebrate the art of cinema, events like these highlight the foundational role of screenwriters in the creative process, ensuring audiences remain captivated by the stories told on the silver screen.
