9 Citations and 1 Arrest in Loitering Enforcement

Source: Santa Maria Police Department

The Santa Maria Police Department along with a staff member from the Central Coast Collaborative on Homelessness conducted a general enforcement detail which included patrolling the areas in close proximity to Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) establishments for loiterers. Loitering in the area of businesses with ABC licenses is strictly enforced. During the operation the enforcement team responded to ten different locations.

A total of 17 individuals were contacted. Of those contacted, nine subjects were cited and released at the scene. The violations included illegal camping, illegal possession of a shopping cart, and being in possession of an alcoholic beverage open container. One subject was arrested and booked for providing false identification to a peace officer, possession of methamphetamine, and on an active arrest warrant. Fifteen of the seventeen subjects contacted were offered human services by Central Coast Collaborative on Homelessness.

Funding for these programs were provided by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control through the Department’s Grant Assistance Program (GAP), and some were funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
